Do violent video games increase teenage violence?
Introduction
During these formative years, teens are easy to influence. All kinds of violence can change the way vulnerable teens think and act. It is well known that violent video games can make teens more aggressive. Teens who play violent video games can change their personalities, their level of aggression, and the way they act. Violence among teenagers has gotten worse over the years as the number of violent technologies has grown. “Many cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have shown that VVGE increased adolescents’ unconsciously aggressive thoughts, feelings, and actions, and even the chance of acquiring a hostile temperament”. (Li et al., 2020)
Statement of Purpose
The goal of this study is to find out if violent video games make teenagers more likely to act violently. Another goal of this study is to find out if there are any other things besides violent video games that make teenagers more aggressive. Also, we want to find out at what point playing violent video games starts to make teenagers more aggressive. Following this, we want to find out if there is any way to treat the aggressive behavior in teens that is caused by playing violent video games.
The rationale for Conducting the Study
The psychological society and family members must know that violent video games can make teenagers more aggressive. Teenagers all over the world play violent video games. Understanding the link between teens being more aggressive and violent video games can help figure out what kind of help might be available. Finding the right way to help teens who act out because they play violent video games can help a lot of people all over the world.
Hypotheses and Research Question
The playing of violent video games is linked to large increases in aggressive behaviors in teenagers. This is the research question.
The usage of violent video games does not significantly increase the likelihood that adolescents would engage in violent conduct, this is the Null Hypothesis.
Research Hypothesis 1: Playing violent video games considerably increases the likelihood of aggressive conduct in teenagers, and this risk is amplified by other aspects of their environment.
Methods, and appropriate statistical test for data analysis
The way this study will measure things is going to be ordinal. Cluster sampling will be used to find people to take part. The qualitative study will measure how aggressive teens feel after playing violent video games for a long time. Surveys will be sent to gamers’ emails as part of the study. Parents will be asked to sign permission forms that give a lot of information about the research study. This is to make sure that no ethical problems will come up. The study will look at 100 gamers between the ages of 10 and 19 who have logged in to a database of violent video games. The users will need to have played the game for at least an hour every day for a year. The 100 people who agreed to take part will be sent surveys that will rate how aggressive they were before they played violent video games. Then, they will be asked how they feel while playing the games. Then, after playing the violent video game, the participants will rate how aggressive they feel. The parents will then be asked to fill out a survey to find out if the teen has become more aggressive since they started watching the violent game.
