Topic 1: Practice of Leadership Analysis

In this class and in previous classes, you have been reading The Leadership Challenge, a book about leaders who have achieved success using the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.

Model the Way

Finding your voice by clarifying personal values
Setting the example by aligning actions with shared values
Inspire a Shared Vision

Envisioning the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities
Enlisting others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations
Challenge the Process

Searching for opportunities by seeking innovative ways to change and improve
Experimenting and taking risks by generating small wins and learning from mistakes
Enable Others to Act

Fostering collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust
Strengthening others by sharing power and discretion
Encourage the Heart

Recognizing contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence
Celebrating the values and victories by creating a spirit of community
For this topic, you are to discuss how one or more of the Five Practices (you do not have to discuss all five) relate to your behavior in becoming a more effective leader. In other words, think of how you are as a leader when you are at your personal best. If so, how is each practice you choose to discuss reflected in your leadership style? If, as you think about these practices, you find that any are not very present in your style, think about and discuss how you could begin to incorporate them into you becoming a more proficient leader. Think specifically about a plan you could create for yourself to begin incorporating the Five Practices. Seek feedback from your classmate to help you, and also give supportive feedback to others.

Topic 2: Cross Cultural Leadership

In the Unit 6 Northouse readings, you have learned more about Gender and Leadership, and Culture and Leadership which expands an understanding on Servant Leadership. For this Discussion topic, you will describe and define Adler and Bartholomew’s five cross-cultural competencies for leaders. Evaluate the competencies you think leaders need. Identify and describe examples from contemporary leaders working in global situations that demonstrate effective leadership proficiencies which you could practice in your own career path.
