Discuss how the different authors use this genre to explore social and historical situations they experienced.
For our first paper, we’ll have 2 choices of topic. Both choices will have the following elements in common, and will be graded on:
Paper will be between 1000-1200 words (not including the Works Cited page)
Paper will be written in MLA format and include both in-text citations and a Works Cited page
Paper will include 2 additional high quality sources outside of the novels we read for class
Paper will be the original work of the student, and properly cite all sources
Paper will follow the topic instructions, and have a purposeful thesis that makes a point about the books
Paper will be turned in to the Assignments Area of D2L as either a .docx, .rtf, or .pdf file type
Choice #2: Compare and contrast the magical realism in Kafka’s Metamorphosis with the magical realism in Like Water for Chocolate. Discuss how the different authors use this genre to explore social and historical situations they experienced. Explain how the magical elements are used for similar (or different) effect in each book, and what accounts for those differences.
Sources for the papers: Please use the library for sources for the paper. You can use e-books, EBSCO, journals, and good old fashioned regular books. Please do not use Sparknotes, Wikipedia, Enotes, and other regular websites. There are great resources available through our library!
