Scenario
Workspace to living accommodation: use the knowledge gained from Assignment 1 (creating
an external workspace), to design and build a micro-home for two persons.
In Assignment 1 you designed a sustainably-built, external structure consisting of one room, with
power for heat and light. This separate workspace has been a success; the use of this building
makes it far easier to get your job done.
There is an opportunity to develop the site used for this building. Instead of a single-room
workspace, the location will be used for a full micro-home structure. For the purposes of this
assignment, we are not concerned with planning regulations or economic viability for the building:
these are dealt with in detail via other modules in your degree programme.
Starting with the just the site (that is, the location and footprint used for the original structure) from
Assignment 1, design a new building on the same footprint, more or less (see ‘Constraints’ below for
more information). The Task details specific requirements for the micro-home in terms of
constraints, space and facilities.
Since the same location is being used, the focus of this Assignment is on human comfort and
accessibility, and all the elements that factor into these. Please read the Task carefully; there are
plenty of additional details within the module content.
Task
Prepare:
1. a written report that responds to the key points listed below;
2. working drawings to the schedule shown.
Report guidelines
These points do not have to be answered in order, or as separate tasks. You can meet the
requirements of this assignment in whatever way best works for you, but there must be a report, and
associated drawings.
For all points, a description is a start, but specific analysis of the problems and solutions within each
one will generate a better mark.
