Create a technical

Create a technical and/or historical piece of writing that is accessible to your
classmates.
The idea is that your peers and I would learn something new and/or have a new
perspective about a piece of mathematics or a mathematician (at least somewhat)
related to Calculus 2.

Requirements:
 Excluding your Works Cited/Bibliography: Minimum of 1 page, maximum of 2 pages,
single-spaced or 1.5-spaced text addressing your topic. Margins cannot exceed 1
inch; maximum font size of 12 point font.
 Use at least 1 parenthetical citation (for either a direct quote or your own
paraphrasing of a quote) to cite an academic source. (e.g., a book, a .edu website,
an academic paper, etc.)
o You must include a proper Works Cited/Bibliography at the end of your paper on
its own separate page.
o Using just 1 source is fine!!
 Include at least one non-textual element, such as a graph/chart, picture, or equation.
o The non-textual element may not take up more than 1/4 to 1/3 of a page!
o Don't forget to cite this as well!
 Use a technical, scientific writing style. (i.e., Do not use "I" or "me"; Do not make
sweeping claims that you don't justify carefully; Do not share your own opinions)
 Choose a topic with specificity. (e.g., Bad topic: "The Importance of Math in the
World"; Good topic: "Isaac Newton's Contributions to Optics")
o Choose one of the suggested topics
 The paper must be completely original (besides of course any quotes you use.)

Suggested Topics:

 Torricelli's Trumpet (also called Gabriel's Horn) and its reception in the 1600s
 Evangelista Torricelli's contributions to physics and/or math
 Isaac Newton's contributions to physics/math/optics
 Isaac Newton and the invention of Calculus
 Gottfried Leibniz and the invention of Calculus (focus on Leibniz notation!)
 Augustin-Louis Cauchy's contributions to math (many think there's no other
mathematician that made a mark in so many fields!)
 What is a differential equation?
 Find an application of numerical integration (perhaps find an integral in some
application that cannot be solved on paper and solve it using numerics!)
 The history of Monte Carlo methods (really cool; surprisingly connects to the US
development of the nuclear weapon)
 John von Neumann's contributions to math (Neumann is probably my favorite
mathematician!)
 Andrew Wiles and the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem (this is some awesome
modern mathematics; Wiles is a living, working mathematician!!)
 The life and legacy of Maryam Mirzakhani (a sad but amazing story about one of the
most influential female mathematicians of our time — Dr. Mirzakhani is still
the only female recipient of the Fields Medal, which is the equivalent of the Nobel
prize but for math!)
