Student A- Megan Houser
When it comes to the topic of gender and race in regards to delinquency, factors such as those stated above (lifestyle, culture, etc.) do play a huge role in determining who is more delinquent. Males are more delinquent than females because they usually tend to be more prone to peer pressure from friends. For example, teenage boys may think they need to “prove” themselves to their friends and that can sometimes result in delinquent behavior. When a female acts on deviant behaviors, it is sometimes a result or response to something tragic happening in their life. Specifically, if a female is a victim of abuse or violence, they can sometimes turn to drugs or alcohol to numb or cope with the pain. However, this is not saying that females cannot act on other deviant behaviors, it is just more common for males.
Race is another factor that can play a part in someone acting on deviant behaviors. Unfortunately, black people tend to get caught up in situations because of a lack of family stability. They are also more likely to become affiliated with gangs because of the location they live in or the feeling of wanting to fit in and find stability in some form.

I believe that each of these factors can play a role on why males are more delinquent than females. In my opinion it is not just one factor at play it a combination of many. According to “Science Daily”(2007),”Boys come into contact with risk factors in their families, school, peers and in their personal attributes more frequently and are sometimes influenced by them more strongly than are girls,” said Abigail Fagan, lead author of the study and an intervention specialist with the University of Washington’s Social Development Research Group” (para. 2). As we can see from this bit of information research shows that boys, unlike girls have influential factors of greater multitudes than girls do. Not to say in a black and white term girl cannot experience this as well, it is just research shows us boys fall into this more than girls do. Also, racial disparities have a significant effect of juvenile delinquency. For example, according to “The Sentencing Project”(2021),” Racial disparities grow with almost every step of the juvenile justice system but start with arrests. Among those juveniles who are arrested, black youth are more likely to have their cases referred to juvenile court. Among those cases referred to court, black youth are more likely to have their cases heard (and not diverted pre-adjudication). Among those cases that are adjudicated, black youth are less likely to receive probation and more likely to be committed to secure placement in a juvenile facility. The arrest disparity is the entrance to a maze with fewer exits for African American youth than their white peers” (para. 20).
