Contrast using Flow and Pause

Write a compare and contrast essay (modeled on Twain’s “Two Views of the Mississippi”) that centers on two ways of viewing something or thinking about something. The comparison/contrast could be based upon changed views over time, the viewpoints of two different groups of people, the effect of purpose upon viewpoint, or another option of your choice. Try to be creative and original.

As in the essays of Twain and Miller, your paper needs to have an argument beyond simply describing the similarities and differences between two viewpoints. (In other words, you need to consider the question, “what is the purpose of making this comparison/contrast?”). Make sure that you use detailed examples of the similarities and/or differences between the two to support that central argument.

Requirements:

1000-1200 words
Must make an argument and give specific examples to support that main argument.
Must contain identifiable examples of stacking, expanding, and telescoping used well and with purpose.
Must be free of grammatical/mechanical error.
12pt Times New Roman, one-inch margins, full name in header on all pages WA1 Rubric
1. Compare and contrast clearly identifies two viewpoints of an object/experience, and describes them well, using detailed examples and original analysis.
2. Argument should be strong and convincing, clearly demonstrating the purpose for the compare and contrast.
3. Sentence variety is evident in the use of Flow and Pause in the essay. Sentences that employ Freighting must do so for a particular purpose. VSS must also have a clear purpose. Long sentences must be grammatical and properly punctuated.
4. Anecdoting must be present in the essay, and the use of the anecdote will be judged by its structure, conciseness, and the strength of the Interpreting (connecting to the paper’s argument).
5. Unity must be evident in the essay. All sentences should be connected to the main idea. Each paragraph should have its own sub-idea, and transitions between paragraphs should be smooth and cohesive.
6. Originality and creativity should be visible in the essay. Avoid cliché or overused ideas.
7. Overall grammar and mechanics. Essay should be free of grammatical errors.
