College Transfer Essay: Please describe your past academic experiences and your reasons for wishing to enroll at this university at this point in your academic career.
Upon migrating to the United States in my Sophomore year in high school due to my mother’s separation from my father, it was not on my will. As a result, I did not have a great expectation of academic achievements. Assisting my mother and younger sister financially was a priority. Therefore, I have been in various part time jobs such as janitor, a server, or a stocker at market.
In my first year of college, my mother divorced my father, and our financial status got worse. I needed more income than receiving the lowest wage. Thankfully, I was given an opportunity for a full time job at a BBQ restaurant. During this time, I was at my lowest point of life. Due to stress, I got gastroesophageal reflux disease and had to receive gastroscopy, which eventually led to academic failure. I was holding a knife point towards the world, constantly thinking, “Why is it me?”
However, one day during work while using the restroom, I saw a monster reflected in the mirror. The child that constantly had a smile on was gone. This moment I realized, the knife that I was pointing at the world was actually pointing at myself. After that day, I started to change. I recognized that being successful in academic progression and achieving a professional job is the way that I can support my family for the future. Thankfully, my mother has met a great partner, and our financial status has enhanced. I was able to change my work shift from full-time to part-time, and was able to focus more on academic plans. As a result, my gpa has slowly but firmly increased. I have collaborated with wonderful professors throughout my college years, however
I chose UMBC because it was close to my house and work, and they had offered me a scholarship.
Now our household’s financial status has enhanced, and I have finished the general requirements at my current school
(Why would I want to transfer to UMD economics? I cannot find the reasons yet. Please state the reasons like one of their specific program is better, or their teaching method is better, etc)
