Civil Society is a phrase commonly used by politicians and the media though if you ask some people what the term meant, many will likely not give the right answer. The term Civil Society refers to a group of organisations which includes community groups, labor unions, charitable organisations, professional associations, non-government organizations, and foundations. The phrase saw increased popularity in economic and political discussions in the 80s when people began identifying it with non-state groups against authoritarian regimes, mainly in Latin America and Eastern and Central Europe. Today, Civil Society is sometimes referred to as the third force after commerce and the government. It is because it is capable of influencing the actions of businesses and those of the policy-makers. However, the nature of Civil Society is still evolving and thus gaming a different nature. Such change is due to several subtle changes evident in societies and the technological changes that are also increasing. Furthermore, the definition of Civil Society is also changing as it is currently recognized to encompass more than just a sector controlled by the NGOs. Therefore, Civil Society today consists of a wider group of unorganized and organized groups, which indicates its new form.
