ENGL 1302 – Paper 2 Assignment

Directions: You will write a paper that discusses one or more of the stories we have read in the FICTION portion of this class. The paper will be a minimum of 3 pages in length and will follow MLA format as discussed on the first day of class and as is shown on the MLA formatted handout.

Your paper will be a character analysis

Write a character analysis of any character from one of the pieces of fiction you read.
You may write about any character, but here are a couple of ideas:
Summers in “The Lottery” Sammy in “A&P”
The Misfit or the Grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”
The girl in “Hill Like White Elephants” (this one was not assigned, just an additional example)
Your paper will be formatted like so:

Introduction:

Identification of source material and introducing of character analysis.
Clear thesis that tells your reader what character you’re using.
Character X is a round/flat/dynamic/static character. Is he the protagonist/antagonist?
All of these things should be identified clearly
EX: Mr. Johnson in “This Story I Made Up” is a round, dynamic character who represents the Jungian archetype of the antihero.
Body paragraphs:

Begin with transitions and topic sentences that identify points used to support your thesis.
Supporting evidence from the fiction pieces and the databases
Analysis—prove that the character is all the things you said he or she is. Prove to me that Mr. Johnson is a round dynamic character. Show me lines from the story and explain.
