Your essay must express a thesis statement, either expressing some overall point about the meaning of the poem you are explicating, or making a meaningful point about the comparisons or contrasts between the poems you plan to discuss.
Your essay must:
Clearly state that main point in a thesis at the end of your introduction, where academic readers expect to find it;
Fully support, develop, and explain your thesis in the body of your paper, using all the elements of good academic essay form, including the following:
An effective Introduction that ends with clear, specific Thesis Statement;
Unified supporting paragraphs in the body of your paper, each of which opens with a clear Topic Sentence (stated in your own words — do not open a paragraph with a quotation. Use sources in the body of the paragraph to support and develop the point your state in its first sentence);
An effective conclusion that re-affirms your main point, leaves your readers with a final thought about the issue, and gives your essay a sense of ending.
You must write your essay for a “General-Skeptical” Audience:
A General Audience is one who has not read any of the sources you have read, is not in our class, and does not know the purpose of your essay before they read it.
Most good essays use numerous brief quotations from their sources.
However, quotations must also be used effectively.
Spacing: Use Double-spacing
Font Size: Use 12 point font.
Font Style: Use either “Ariel” or “Times New Roman” only.
Margins: Use the normal 1” margins
Title: Include an informative, original title:
I.e. do not simply title your essay “Essay #1” or Fences. Instead, write a title that fits your paper.
Center your title at the top of your paper.
