Carbon Management

ASSESSMENT TASK
Carbon Management report
SUBMISSION FORMAT
You are required to submit one document in Turnitin. A Word file is preferable, but PDF is also
acceptable. Please ensure that the document does not exceed 1500 words (+10%) including tables but
excluding references.
Part 2. Carbon Management Plan (50% of total mark for this Unit)
Many organisations are now being encouraged to develop a Plan for reducing their carbon emissions. For
this assignment, you are required to critically evaluate the Carbon Management Plan (CMP) developed
for Bournemouth University (BU). This Plan was prepared in 2010, as part of a national initiative
sponsored by the UK Government and supported by the Carbon Trust.
This part of the assignment should be presented in the form of a written report, in a style that might be
employed by a professional environmental consultant. The report should therefore be concise and clear,
and communicate information effectively in a way that can readily be understood by a non-technical
audience. The report should identify the strengths and weaknesses of BU’s Carbon Management Plan. In
addition, you are required to propose recommendations as how this Plan should be further developed in
future, to reduce carbon emissions in a cost-effective manner. The word limit for this part of the
assignment is 1500 words. Please provide your report as a Microsoft Word file.
To help you with this part of the assignment, you are provided with a series of documents on Brightspace,
including:

  1. A copy of BU’s current Carbon Management Plan.
  2. A guide to good practice for production of carbon management plans, produced by HEFCE.
Part of your answer, therefore, should focus on whether BU has followed the ‘best practice’ identified by
HEFCE. You are also strongly encouraged to consult at least one carbon management plan of a
university with a higher score in the latest Green League Table (http://peopleandplanet.org/universityleague) and recommend ways in which BU could improve its ‘carbon performance’ in future. Please
clearly justify suggestions that you make. As part of this, you should include an estimate of the carbon
reduction that might be achieved if your suggestions were implemented, together with an estimate of their
    potential financial costs.
    Additional resources
The Carbon Trust is a not-for-profit company set up by the UK Government to assist with the transition to
a ‘low carbon’ economy. Some materials developed by the Carbon Trust are provided to you on
Brightspace, but you may also find it useful to consult the resources on their website:
    http://www.carbontrust.com
There are now many other internet resources available that focus on carbon management and you are
    encouraged to explore these.
You may also find useful the following on-line resources about BU:
    • https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/sustainability (Sustainable IT Policy, Sustainability Policy,
Travel Plan, Sustainable Food Policy, Fairtrade Policy, Sustainable Procurement Policy and Ethical
    Investment Policy)
    • https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/directions-maps (Talbot Campus and Lansdowne maps)
    MARKING CRITERIA
The following criteria will be used to assess the assignment:
    (i) demonstration of a critical understanding of the global carbon cycle, and the patterns and processes of
global climate change; (ii) comprehension of methods used for evaluating carbon emissions and
sequestration; (iii) an ability to critically evaluate scientific evidence relating to climate change and carbon
