Assessment #2: Developing a personal theory of learning
Due: 31.8.2020
Word count: 1000 words written essay or 10-15 minute audio or audio-visual
presentation.
Weighting: 15%
Use insights from the concept map, Week 1, 2, and 4 lecture videos, the textbook,
and further academic readings to compose your response to the following task.
Support your ideas with reference to the textbook and at least one other relevant,
scholarly source (i.e., journal article or book, not a website).
Your response needs to include 4 parts. Respond as one essay; you do not need to
number the parts in your response, but you should include descriptive headings.
1. How do you define learning? What do you consider as the critical attributes of
learning? Develop your personal theory with a definition and at least two critical
attributes. You can use lecture materials, the textbook, or any other academic
references to support your ideas. (400 words; 4 to 5 minutes)
2. Your metaphor for learning. Devise your own metaphor or analogy for learning,
and explain its connection to your understanding of learning developed in Part 1 of
your response. (300 words; 3 to 4 minutes)
3. Based on your definition of learning, discuss the two key factors that may
account for variations in a student's learning either in an early childhood, primary or
secondary context. Please choose any one context depending on which year level
you plan to teach and where your interest lies. (300 words; 3 to 4 minutes)
4. Reference list
Notes regarding presentation of your response
Use clear structure in your response. Avoid long paragraphs.
Check correct APA referencing. Avoid using long quotes, and cite the author(s), year
and page number(s) if any quotations are used. If you are doing a presentation, your
slides also need to follow correct APA referencing.
Check APA for composing your references list. Include only works cited, in
alphabetical order of surname, and note no dot points or numbers are used. Include
full references, with the title of the journal in italics, or book title in italics. If you are
doing a presentation, your last slide needs to include a reference list in APA format.
Proofread your response carefully before you submit it to Turnitin. Turnitin does not
accept videos. If you are doing a presentation, contact the convenor for submission.
Remember that critical attributes need to be part of the definition. If the definition
does not include them, they are not critical attributes.
