BUDGET CHOICES
Team: Squad Size: $ Budget Amount:
Softball or Baseball 30 Players (2 coaches) $25,000
Football 95 Players (8 coaches) 100,000
Basketball (Men or Women) 15 Players (4 coaches) 45,000
You are a head coach of a college sport. You will be responsible for staying within a set budget that is given to you at the beginning of the year. You will need to budget for travel on a coach bus, meals for home and away trips, accommodations if you are on an overnight trip, equipment, and recruiting.
Things like coach’s salary, phones (land line), computers, postage, and facility maintenance will be taken care of by the athletic department budget. You will not have to figure that into your team budget.
Using the dollar amount listed above for the sport that you choose, complete the following information using an excel spreadsheet or your own version (cannot be hand written).
Find the team’s game/match schedule on their website. Print it out. Use it to determine the number of away trips (overnight and day, this is up to you and your budget). Go to mapquest.com (or a similar website) and see what the mileage will be for each trip. You do not have to take everyone on your squad to away trips. You can decide how many people will be on your travel squad.
Based on your budget, you need to decide how many people you can afford to put in each room. You also need to budget for coaches while traveling.
Make a list of potential equipment/apparel needed to play the sport. Look at a website and see how much the equipment would cost retail. You can expect to get 40% off the retail price, round to the nearest dollar and do not worry about shipping costs. For Example: It will cost $54 per person to get Basketball shoes ($90 retail), $30 per ball for 15 new basketballs ($50 retail), and $60 for new warm-ups ($100 retail). You can buy new uniforms if you have the money.
Miscellaneous Information: In this area you can include things like going to conventions, recruiting/scouting off campus, and big ticket items that you may want to purchase for your team. If you go to a convention or recruiting, make up a location and include the cost of a plane ticket (if needed), recruiting car, hotel, meals ($20 per day for food), cost of attendance for the convention, and any other pertinent information. For Training Camps (Fall or Winter), please add $20 per day per person (including coaches) for food. Does your sport require entry fees to away tournaments? Put this under the MISC category.
If you need help, ask me or a college coach where to get the necessary information.

Your final product should include the following:
Team Schedule

Spreadsheet of your budget
Be sure that your budget is legible when printed.

Separate Sheet of Paper: Information from a website with details about your equipment

Separate Sheet of Paper: Brief Details about and Miscellaneous information
Separate Sheets of Paper: Answers to these questions
If you were really coaching this team, would this budget be realistic in covering your costs? Explain why or why not. What additional expenses do you think could arise that would cause you to go over your budget or would you have enough money to cover them?
Do you think teams with larger operating budgets have a competitive advantage over teams with smaller budgets?
If you had to take a $5,000 budget cut, would you have to cut trips or would you be able to survive with less of something else? What would you do without?
