biology statistics

In order to write a good homework, quiz, and/or exam question, one must have a solid grasp of
the material. In order to push you deeper into the concepts we discuss in class, you will be
generating questions as well as providing an answer key that explains how the correct answer is
determined. Although this might sound easy, it is and will turn out more difficult that you expect,
so please make sure you start this assignment well before it is due.
I will also warn you that simply going online or into textbooks and modifying questions
you find will not help you learn the material. More importantly Turnitin will find any
plagiarism issues. Please complete this assignment on your own. It will really help you
learn the material thoroughly.
Generation of good questions can be guided by Bloom’s Taxonomy which is a set of three
hierarchical models that classify learning objectives. Specifically, we can use the cognitive
domain to help design good questions. More details and much of the following information is
from the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and you can read more here (https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/
guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/). The cognitive domain is broken into six categories:
remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, create, as seen in the figure below.
Piasta 2021, Page 1 of 3
The categories can be explained as follows:
• Remembering: knowledge – recall or recognize information, and ideas
• Understanding: comprehension – understand the main idea of material heard, viewed, or
read. Interpret or summarize the ideas in own words.
• Applying: application – apply an abstract idea in a concrete situation to solve a problem or
relate it to prior experience.
• Analyzing: analysis – break down a concept or idea into parts and show relationships
among the parts.
• Evaluating – evaluation – make informed judgments about the value of ideas or materials.
Use standards and criteria to support opinions and views.
• Creating – synthesis – bring together parts of knowledge to form a whole and build
relationships for new situations.
As you might now realize, questions on homework, quizzes, and exams can probe differently
levels of the cognitive domain of the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. A question that asks you to
recall the name of something is in the remembering category. Answering correctly just requires
memorization. However, a question that asks you to calculate something using a method you
have learned could be considered to be in the apply category. This question would require use
of remembering and understanding in order correctly solve the question.
For the Student Generated Question assignment, I would like you to write a set of true and false
questions as well as design ONE multipart question containing a series of SIX questions that
span from the remember category all the way through and including the create category.
All of the questions must be related to the life sciences if necessary (no cards or dice for
example)! For example, the T/F questions may not all need to explicitly have life science
added to them, but the open-ended questions should all revolve around some sort of life life
science (biology, medicine, etc.)
The T/F questions CAN NOT involve calculations to answer them. They should be essential
concepts and not be simply memorization based questions.
For examples, you could look at old Biolab exams as they are designed around this approach –
if you haven’t taken Biolab, I’d be happy to share an example. There are very good descriptions
and examples online that you can use to get started. One that might be of use can be found
here (https://education.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/casei/5-02-Revised%20Blooms.pdf).
You should upload the SGQ similar to how I post the answer keys for problem sets – you do not
need to hand write the answers, but you might find it is easier. For each answer in the openended question section, you must label the category on Bloom’s taxonomy the question falls
into.
DO NOT INCUDE THE ANSWERS AT THE END OF THE DOCUMENT – MAKE SURE THE
ANSWER IS DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE QUESTION.
Each SGQ will contain the following where you are limited to 2 pages MAX including your
answers, but you can include a 3rd page as a cover page with equations if you would like.
