Biological Approach to Politics

This module focused on introducing the integration of a biological approach to political science/political psychology. Consider the opening quote of the Gonzalez, et al (2016) piece:
“Take a minute to think about your views on some prominent issues in contemporary American politics — healthcare, immigration, military intervention in the Middle East, income inequality, affirmative action, or capital punishment…Whatever your views on these hotly contested issues, why do you suppose you have the attitudes that you do? … Who we are politically is shaped by forces of which we are unaware. Because of these forces, we are often blind to the sources of our attitudes and unaware of certain attitudes altogether. Our political opinions, therefore, consist of elements that we are not able to report to ourselves let alone to others.”
Write a short 3 page reflection essay on how this makes you feel. Is this an exciting development for political psychology? A terrifying one? Or perhaps both? Explain why you think so.
Secondly, and regardless of your answer to the question above, do you believe having a biological underpinning to political attitudes and behavior would likely lead to more or less tolerance (something the scholars read this week debated). Explain why you think so.
Lastly, be sure to reflect upon how your opinion may/may not have changed, based on the class discussion and/or lecture this week.
Remember: this is not a summary/book report. This is your opportunity to show me you have not only read the material (which I assume you have done) but that you have thought critically about the material and engaged with it thoughtfully with your classmates.
