For this essay, you will address (Links to an external site.) the question, “What does the future hold for US global leadership under the Trump administration?” Answering this question will require you to consider the nature of power in the 21rst century and the sources of U.S. strength. Fortunately, I have a video and two articles that will help you with this task!
First, you should watch this 20 minute video from Joseph Nye on global power shifts (Links to an external site.): https://www.ted.com/talks/joseph_nye_global_power_shifts?language=en
For a critical perspective on Donald Trump’s foreign policy, read “The Plot Against American Foreign Policy (Links to an external site.)” by G. John Ikenberry. (I left screenshots)
For a positive perspective on Donald Trump’s foreign policy, read “The Case for Trump’s Foreign Policy (Links to an external site.)” by Matthew Kroenig. (I left screenshots).
Your paper will be 3-4 pages, and should include significant references to the three assigned items (make sure that references to the assigned materials are identified with in-text citations so I can give you credit for them). The paper is due at the end of Week Ten.
Here are some things that you should pay attention to as you work on your paper:
1. Proofread to make sure that there are not grammatical or typing errors.
2. Structure your paper clearly. There should be an introductory paragraph that clearly identifies what your main points will be. There should be a conclusion as well.
3. Do not use first person statements. That means don’t say “I” or “me”. In a paper like this, your assertions should be supported by arguments or evidence, they should not be offered as an opinion. You can definitely provide a point of view, but instead of saying “I believe that…” “I feel that…” say something like “The evidence shows that…” or “the most sensible interpretation is that…”. You definitely can provide your own interpretations or views, but present them as views that make sense based on arguments and facts, not just your own preferences.
4. Make use of the readings, and cite them to support your arguments. You do not need a bibliography unless you find a source other than the three above. However, you should identify quotations and materials you take from the readings with in-text citations, such as: (Lyons, p. 3).If there is no page number, just provide that last name of the author in parentheses.
5. Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced with one-inch margins.
6. Plagiarism will be penalized severely, and could be grounds for failing the course.
