Assignment: Your syllabus lists the goals of ENG 1021. These skills are the same across all sections of Composition and guide the writing assignments and class activities that teachers assign. For your final assignment, you will review these skills and determine which of them you have acquired or significantly improved upon this semester. You will then select three (or more) of these skills and compose a letter to the instructor in which you make a convincing case that you have grown in these areas this semester.

Introduction:    Use the conventions of the letter to greet the recipient with an appropriate salutation (Dear Professor Fladeboe, Greetings Instructor, or Hi Amy) and introduce the topic of course reflection. Finish the opening paragraph with a clear sentence that lists the three course competencies you will be discussing.

Body:               Discuss these three skills, one paragraph at a time. For each body paragraph, explain which competency you reached in the topic sentence and then back up your claims with specific examples drawn from your coursework. In other words, you should quote, paraphrase, and summarize particular passages from your discussion board posts and replies, tests, practice worksheets, and major writing assignments that illustrate your growth in the areas you have chosen to discuss. Since you will be the author of all examples, insert footnotes instead of in-text citations to keep your sources organized. Your examples that serve as evidence for this learning should be introduced and explained afterwards as if you are quoting any expert in a standard academic paragraph. Don’t forget to summarize the paragraphs and transition smoothly from one to the next.

Conclusion:     In the last paragraph, wrap up your letter by echoing your body paragraph topics and identifying one or more writing skills that you would like to continue to work on and discuss the role that writing may play in your future, as you move on to other courses, your major, or into your profession. Include an appropriate salutation (Sincerely, Regards, Thanks, etc.) and signature at the end.

Footnotes:        Footnotes can be added wherever your cursor is by clicking on the References tab and then “Insert Footnote.” Use the corresponding footnote in the below margin to list your full works cited entry. A works-cited entry for an unpublished student paper should include you as the author, the title of the paper (in quotation marks), date of submission, the course name, the institution for which the paper was prepared, and the type of work.[1]
