Assignment 2 Journal
This assignment should be completed once you are approximately 75% finished reading your novel. For this assignment you will be writing a reflective journal. Use the prompts below to reflect on what you’ve read so far, to make a prediction about the story’s ending, and to think critically about the author’s writing style.
In a single Journal entry, write three paragraphs responding to the following writing prompts (800-1000 words):
Paragraph 1 – Personal reflection: What do you like or dislike about the story, genre, or characters so far? Has anything interesting happened so far? Support your response with quotes from the novel.
Paragraph 2 – Analyze the author’s style: Does the author use any techniques, vocabulary, or literary devices to enhance their writing? Use the provided handout. Address tone, point of view, conflict. What do you like or dislike about the author’s style. Be specific, providing examples to support your ideas.
Paragraph 3 – Make a prediction: How do you think the story will end? What leads you to this conclusion? Is it the characters’ attitudes, the setting, or perhaps the author’s unique style that has convinced you of this ending? Does it seem plausible or realistic?

This is a pre-reading task and should be completed BEFORE you begin reading your novel. It is designed to begin a process of thought that will help you to better understand your novel. It will also help you to make stronger predictions about the text as you read.
Respond to the following questions as you examine your novel:
1. Describe the front cover of your novel. Try to include as much detail as possible, so that someone without access to this book could visualize the cover in their mind.
2. Read the back cover. Based on your examination of both covers, what do you KNOW about this novel? This should not be an assumption or prediction. Simply put into your own words what you have learned from the book’s covers.
3. Find something similar. You may not know much about your novel yet, but hopefully the publishing company has used its covers to give you a sense of what to expect. Based on this alone, find a similar book, movie, or TV series. In a few sentences, describe how you think your novel might be similar (perhaps tone, genre, characters, theme, etc).
4. Make a prediction about the story’s plot. What will happen? What leads you to this conclusion?
