Task Overview
This is a PAIRED assignment – and only in very special situations will a group of three (3) students be allowed.
The word ‘
group

will be used to refer to the pair in which you will be working. Because of the nature of the
assignment, you would be well advised to start working on it way ahead of the deadline.
The following is the scenario that you will be addressing.
Your partner and you have decided to start up a business here in Auckland. You both feel that the best way to
go about this is to import products from other countries (in this case, from either Cambodia or Bangladesh)
and to then market the selected product(s) here in New Zealand. You realize that one of the most important
import decisions is that of the selection of the right types of products for the domestic market. You do not
have any experience at this, but you are excited at the opportunity to do gain some proficiency in this.
Nonetheless, you realize that you have to tread carefully as you do not want to end up with a warehouse full
of unsellable merchandise that no one wants.
You know that in addition to finding the right product to import, you will also need to determine the right
suppliers, engage in international sourcing, finance the imports, deal with customs and make sure that the
products can be brought into the country without any problems. There seems to be quite a lot of things that
need to be done in order to have the product here. Subsequent to the importation of these products, you are
cognizant of the fact that you will have to engage in the formulation of marketing strategies so that the
potential customers will be aware of the product and will want to buy the product. However, for the purposes
of this assignment, you do not have to consider the formulation of such marketing strategies postimportation.
After much consideration your partner and you have decided to import running shorts from either Cambodia
or Bangladesh. You would like the product to include your company

s logo.
Your task in this assignment is to demonstrate how you would actually go about determining product
specifications and selecting a final supplier from a range of possible manufacturers in your chosen country,
among other things. You will be required to demonstrate that you have engaged in real-life research and
have consulted relevant international trade bodies/organizations in one form or another in order to
determine possible suppliers.
Having done that you are to demonstrate the steps that you might take to choose a particular supplier and to
then do that which is necessary to source and import the product into New Zealand. You will have to show

that you have taken into consideration matters such as methods of payment, international logistics and
documentation and financing of your imported goods.
In writing this assignment, please make sure that you address the following:
1. Any and all specifications and strategic assumptions that you will have made about the product that you
are intending to bring into New Zealand. You will be expected to explain why these specifications need to
be clearly stated.
2. A detailed discussion on how you will go about selecting your final choice of supplier. You will need to
specify the process and the places that you will look into to find the supplier (a simple
‘Google suppliers

will not suffice). You will be expected to include a substantial discussion of how you would go about
selecting your supplier. Areas that you might want to consider when doing this include the following:
quality assurance, financial conditions; service performance, perceived risks; buyer-supplier relationships;
trade restrictions; logistics and return policies and possible transaction challenges.
3. A discussion of how you intend to finance the imports and to ensure that you use a payment method that
will be acceptable to all parties involved in the transaction.
4. You also realize that you can learn from other people and so have decided that you will look into some of
the most common mistakes that potential importers face when importing from your chosen country.
What might some of these be and what steps might you take to ensure that you avoid these?
5. You will be expected to demonstrate that you have taken all documentary requirements for export and
import (customs and so on) into consideration.
Word limit
Your word limit is 3,000 words +/- 10% (excludes the cover page, the Executive Summary, the Table of
Contents, the Reference List and appendices). Please note that your Executive Summary should not be
more than 1.5 pages long. There will be strict adherence to the word limit and your report will be penalized
if it is either too long or too short.

Plagiarism and referencing
Plagiarism is very serious, and you and your assignment partner(s) may fail if plagiarism is found to be at an
unacceptable level in your submitted work. I expect your assignment to be your own work. It should not be
copied from anywhere or be from any previous assignments (even your own previously submitted
assignment). In the event that plagiarism has been detected, one of two things can happen. The first is that
your report will be assessed as though there was no plagiarism, and a mark/grade will be given. Having done

this, a penalty based on the severity of the plagiarism will then be applied. The second is that your report will
be marked and then referred to Academic Integrity for a final decision on your marks/grade.
A reference list should be included at the end of your assignment and should contain only the publications
you used in your assignment. Do not include materials from Wikipedia as the university does not consider
this to be an accurate source of information. You may wish to source for information from government
websites, reputable journals, newspapers and magazines (e.g. Businessweek, Forbes, Fortune). Do not include
a bibliography. Please format your references list in accordance with the requirements of the APA 7 Edition.
Peer evaluation
This is a

paired’
assignment and students will be required to work as a team in order to successfully complete
this assignment. Where there is a group of more than two members, students may submit a confidential peer
evaluation of themselves and their team members. This is done to prevent or to minimize social loafing.
Please note that if you do not pull your weight in this assignment your team members could give you a poor
evaluation and this would then result in a reduction of your marks. The evaluation form is attached. If no
peer evaluation forms are submitted, I will assume that there were no problems with team cooperation and all
team members will receive the same marks. (Do not submit the peer evaluation forms if you are happy with
each other

s work).
For pairs that are made up of two members, students are expected to sort out by themselves any differences
that might occur in writing this assignment rather than to submit a peer evaluation form. In the event of
disputes group members in the pair may be asked to identify their individual contributions to the assignment
and these will be judged accordingly by the lecturer.
Where peer evaluation forms are submitted, they must be emailed to the lecturer no later than 15 minutes
after the submission deadline. In the event that your submission is late, you will also need to make sure that
the peer evaluation form is submitted within 15 minutes of your having uploaded your assignment report onto
Canvas. Forms received after this time period will not be entertained. In the event that a group does not
submit any peer evaluation forms, all member of the group will receive equal marks. In the case of a
particular group member not submitting his or her own peer evaluation form, the information gathered from
the other peer evaluation forms will form the basis on which the marks awarded are distributed. In such
events, please note that the lecturer will not entertain any requests for reconsideration.
The peer evaluation form has been made available in the Microsoft Office Word document format. You are to
use the MS WORD format and to submit that to me in accordance with the instructions above. Please note
the following conditions:
● If both of you (or all of you as the case may be) are happy with the level of work that you have all put into
the report then there is no need to submit the peer evaluation form. You will all get the same marks
awarded for the assignment.
● If you desire to submit the peer evaluation form, then please make sure that all members of the group are
notified of this intention and that everyone in the group submits the forms to me individually and
confidentially.
