art 101 analysis

The work of art you select MUST be located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art located on 5th Avenue & 82nd Street. You have the option of going to the museum in person or taking a virtual tour, the choice is up to you. If you go to the museum itself, you need to make a reservation well in advance. The required Virtual Tour can be found on You Tube “A World of Art: The Metropolitan Museum” and is 50:35 long. The museum website is www.metmuseum.org and has instructions on how to plan your in person visit if you choose that option. No option will be given more credit than the other. The choice is entirely up to you.

you must attach a copy of image
the paper must include a formal analysis of the work: name of work, artist if known, date, material, size, technique, composition, color, line shape
the paper must include an iconographic analysis – what is being depicted in the art work? religious or historical narrative, landscape, portrait, still life, mood and how color or shape effect that mood & your reaction to it?
the paper must include an iconological analysis – context of the work’s creation it is part of a larger program such as a statue that is one of several seen in relief on a building? Did the creators make a multitude of this type of work in order to present a certain cultural idea to the populus, congregants, inhabitants?
if you choose the option of going to the museum please include a brief descriiption (2-3 sentences) of your reaction to seeing the work of art at the museum itself in comparison to seeing works on the computer whether blackboard, powerpoint or You Tube or other video.
proper source citation for any verbatim language used within the paper and for any ideas, themes etc. that were not your own. For example, elements seen in art of the archaic period of ancient Greece – domed head males, stylized hair, slight smile etc. does not have to be cited. But if you use an idea from any reading or other source you must cite the source. For example, in discussing trompe l’oeil images (literally meaning to fooling the eye because it “appears” as if it were real) Laurie Schneider-Adams gives the following example. “The ancient Greek artist Zeuxis was said to have painted grapes so realistically that birds pecked at them.” Pg. 7 Art Across Time. 3rd Edition. 2007.

Do not use WIKIPEDIA as a source for any information it is not a fact verified. The museum website or artist’s website or jstor (periodicals) are proper research resources for this project.
