basic understanding that sex has multiple dimensions
depending on where one stands on a continuum of
possibilities. Genetic sex, gonadal sex, hormonal sex, genital
sex, and androgenital syndrome (born with an intersexual
condition) are all specific examples of the variations that can
take place as part of the human condition.
Gender Identity (maleness or femaleness) is a learned
behavior pattern and usually becomes stable around 3-4yrs
old. Gender Roles are learned behaviors whereby
socialization accounts for most gender differences.
You can see from these two gender terms (identity and role)
that both are learned behaviors and are determined by our
exposure to one’s society, culture, family and other
influential factors in their lives.
Most psychologists now see psychological androgyny as
appealing, as it is neither too much one nor the other
(female vs. male or male vs. female). The individual is neither
exclusively female nor male but both in their behavior and
allows the individual to determine which is most
appropriate at any given time, situation or need. There is
little difference between males and females and it is
culturally influenced. At one time it was thought that
women had very different sexual needs, desires and
behaviors than men but with ongoing surveys, longitudinal
studies, and other research i.e. Kinsey report, we now know
that there is little difference between males and females in
