Grading Guidelines
This paper is worth 15% of or 15 points of your overall grade.
Students will write a 3-4-page paper excluding title page and references page.
Students will select a short story from Dream Me Home Safely and select a nursing
middle range theory that applies to the story. The theory must be a nursing middle
range theory that applies to the story.
Use the list of middle range theories listed below or use a different middle-range
theory not listed.

Introduction (3 points)
Introduce the middle-range nursing theory that you have identified from a selected
short story. Explain/describe key aspects of the middle-range theory in relation to the
short story.
Summary of Short Story (2 points)
Summarize the short story. The summary begins with the title and author of the story.
The subsequent sentences provide information that addresses the central idea of the
story, the point the writer wanted to get across and what events lead up to that
conclusion.
Description of Theory (6 points)
Describe in detail the nursing middle range theory selected. This description must be
accurate and provide information necessary to explain the important concepts,
attributes of the theory and how they relate to the short story selected. Use the short
story to provide examples of the middle- range theory selected.
Scholarly Writing (4 points)
This paper must have a minimum of three peer-reviewed references to support the
paper development. Websites are not included as part of the professional references.
Make sure to cite the short story correctly. LOOK AT HOW TO CITE A CHAPTER IN A
EDITED BOOK. All papers must meet standards for scholarly writing and graduate
level work. Your paper should be well written (clarity), have the appropriate type and
number of references, if applicable, and meet APA style and formatting standards.
Clarity:
Mechanics: Correct sentence structure, grammar, and appropriate capitalization.
Correct punctuation and style, no spelling errors, no run-on sentences, no sentence
fragments, no incomplete thoughts, and dangling participles.
Language: No medical jargon, no colloquialisms (slang and informal ways of speaking)
unless using this language for a reason (repeating a conversation or giving an
example).
