1. WORDS: Circle the ones you don’t know and look them up. (For this assignment, I highlighted the hard
words and define them at the end of this handout.) The best thing to do is to find one word that can
replace the one you don’t know – a synonym. Try to use new words in future writing assignments. I’ll give
you extra credit whenever you do this.
2. ANNOTATIONS: Part of the goal of this course is to teach you how to read hard things in college.
Annotating is one of the best tools you can use to do this. Please circle words you don’t know (or keep a
list of them), summarize each paragraph with a phrase to remind you of what it was about, and underline
the most important sentences or phrases. On the class discussion board, you will be asked to post a photo
of your annotations and then identify what sentence from this reading you think is the most important
one. You will be asked to justify your answer. Keep that in mind as you read.
3. QUESTIONS: (YES. These seem annoying at first, but I promise that they will help you understand the
hard text. YES, there are a lot! But it will get easier. Also, some of the questions are simple. And I won’t
give you as many as the semester goes by.) Answer the questions below in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Using
complete sentences is a good way to work on your writing – it helps you practice advanced sentence
structure. The easiest way to do this is to copy part of the question you are answering. I give examples of
complete and incomplete sentences with the first two questions below. Use your own words – do not
simply copy from the book. This helps me know you understand what you have read.
