The Year of Living Dangerously takes place in Indonesia ruled by the dictator Sukarno. It is not under the Western rule. Great Britain and France were both imperialistic powers profiting from their rules, but their nature differed. The Raj was racist believing in the superiority of white skin (I realize I am oversimplifying here) while French Colonialism in Indochina which became Viet Nam was class not race-based as the upper classes moved easily with each other. While equally greedy for the resources, the French did not share the Brit’s color bias.
The Quiet American takes us into Indochina during this period. The point of view is that of a British journalist in love with the country, symbolized by his mistress, who is forced to take sides when the American CIA attempts to manipulate the revolutionary leadership before the U.S. involvement in the conflict. Beyond Rangoon takes us inside Myanmar, once British colonial Burma, under a brutal military dictatorship.
Travelers and Magicians provide a welcome break as we move to Bhutan for a beautifully symbolic tale written by a Bhutanese monk who attended film school in the United States.
In all cases, we examine in the individual caught in the web of circumstance, much as our lives are now influenced by the pandemic.
