Analyze evidence of the chosen theme

Instructions
Major Assignment #4: Variations on an Indigenous Theme

Goal: The goal in this project is to identify and discuss a common theme that runs throughout multiple works of indigenous literature. Over the course of the class, you’ve been introduced to a number of indigenous themes, including animals, sovereignty, trickster, personhood, land, history, colonialism, resistance, and identity. A strong project will accomplish two major goals:

Analyze evidence of the chosen theme from texts within the class.
Compare and contrast way the theme is presented by at least three different authors or traditions.
The final project may be delivered in one of three formats (paper, audio-visual presentation, or podcast – see below).

General Guidelines (Applies to all three options):

You are welcome to work on any of the themes discussed in class or you may come up with your own theme.
You must track the theme through at least three different texts that we read in class.
The project should be substantially different the first three projects in the class.
Feel free to incorporate materials from previous discussion posts, projects, lectures or class activities as long as the majority of the material is new.
You may use my lecture material as long as you extend and build on the ideas presented there.
The project should analyze multiple pieces of evidence from each of the texts you choose to work on.
Choose one of the following options for submitting the final project.

Delivery Option #1: Literature Paper (At least 1200 words)

This option is recommended for students pursuing careers and degrees with an advanced level of research and writing. The paper should clearly illustrate similarities and differences between each text’s variation on that theme, while adhering to the standards of a literary analysis paper.

Requirements:

MLA formatting
Meets literary analysis requirements (See Weeks 8-11)

Delivery Option #2: Visual or Spatial Thematic Map and Presentation

If you would prefer not to write your final assignment, then you may create a visual representation of your thematic analysis to be discussed in a short audio recording.

Requirements:

Visually explain or illustrate connections between a theme and its evidence.
Page numbers must accompany any quotations.
The final project must include the following three items:
Works Cited (MLA)
Visual Representation (poster, prezi, powerpoint, comic strip, etc.)
Audio Recording Explaining Visual (At least 5 minutes)

Any visual medium is acceptable. For example, you could create a comic strip, a 3-D model, a large poster, a collage, or a prezi. The audio recording can be a separate file, a voice memo, or part of the powerpoint. The combined recordings must be at least five minutes in length.

Delivery Option #3: Podcast (at least 15 minutes)

Let’s say you’re more comfortable talking your way through ideas. For this delivery option, you would create a voice memo or audio recording that is 15-25 minutes in length in which you elaborate and develop your theme. All of the requirements still apply.

Submission Requirements:

Voice Recording (at least 15 minutes)
Works Cited Page in MLA

Additional Grading Criteria:

Critical Thinking (25%): Did you delve deep into the theme and your analysis?

Presentation (25%): Does the final product look/sound like you have taken the project seriously?

Literary Analysis (25%): Must include points, evidence, analysis, and MLA.

Grasp of Subject Matter (25%): Is it clear you have attempted to understand the chosen texts and the context in which they were written?
