an intermediate algebra course

You will be required to attend each meeting each week. Attendance will be collected by a
check in.
Exams
Exams will be assigned via Canvas. Exams will essentially have the same turn in rules as with
assignments. However, there will be a far more restricted time frame to complete exams.
Exams will be made available on Canvas as assignments and only visible on the day of each
exam. Please see schedule below.
Textbooks and materials
-Elementary and intermediate Algebra by Carson, Jordan, 4th edition.
Low cost: $30 to rent, but you must shop around. Used may be cheaper.
-A scientific (non graphing) calculator (TI 30 XS, 34, 30XIIS, or 36 pro) is recommended for this
course. No graphing calculators may be used for the exams.

Course Description
This course combines the topics found in a beginning and intermediate algebra class and is
meant as an accelerated 1-semester alternative to the normal Math 110/130 2-semester
sequence. Topics typically duplicated in an intermediate algebra course shall be covered once,
at greater length and in greater detail. Topics include solving linear and quadratic equations
and inequalities; polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions; graphing linear and
quadratic functions; polynomial, rational, and radical arithmetic; solving rational, radical,
exponential and logarithmic equations; graphing lines, parabolas, and other conic sections;
and complex numbers. Application problems are solved throughout the course.

Messages on Canvas are emailed to me directly, so this serves as an equivalent.

Make up policy
The simplified version is no make ups on short notice or after the due date. The formal policy is
as follows: Prior arrangements must be made two weeks in advance with instructor if the
student has a serious and compelling reason (documentation is required). If any of the above
requirements is not met, a score of zero will be assigned to the missed exam. Make up policy
for assignments: Zero to half credit for late homework and activities may be given with prior
notification. No late assignments after the exam pertaining to those chapters.
