Aims of the Honours Project
The aim of the project module is to provide you with an opportunity to work independently researching an area of specific interest to you. This also provides an opportunity to look in greater depth at an area of crime and criminal justice, which will be beneficial for your future career OR you are passionate about. Through the conduct of your dissertation/research report you will gain practical and direct experience of a review of appropriate literature, research design, methodology and analysis, interpretation and reporting of research findings. The dissertation must be your own independent work.

Your research can be of any of the following forms:

1. A piece of empirical work using primary or secondary data, or a combination of both. You may adopt a qualitative, quantitative or mixed method approach and the research should be presented in the format of a standard research report.

2. *A library-based investigation, which can take the form of an extended literature review that, employs the use of some form of textual analysis / examination of policy initiatives within criminal justice / closely related areas.

*For example, this can be valuable for those of you who might want to look at the experiences of a group who are classed as vulnerable, which will be ethically challenging

The area, which you investigate, must have a link with crime and or crime prevention (victims, perpetrators or process interventions) concerning the justice system. You are encouraged to use your experiences or interests, which relate to issues of crime and criminal justice. This might include experience gained from volunteering/placement, paid work or other areas of experience. Such links can be important in making the dissertation important and interesting for you and your future academic / career development.

The overall aims of the module are to further develop your research abilities. In particular all students will be assisted to:

• Plan a research project (Linking with previous research method modules)
• Identify aims that are achievable, ethical and relevant
• Design a research strategy and utilise a method to achieve aims
• Carry out the research and write up with a description and discussion of results, a set of valid conclusions and recommendations for future practice or further research.

Word length
The honours project is worth 40 credits with a maximum length of 8,000 words, excluding critical reflection 1000 words, tables, appendices and bibliography.
