Steady won’t last long
Plot: John is a normal office worker. He always finishes his due on time and he was hoping to have this job till retire. He doesn’t even think about promotion. He is satisfied with the current situation.
Conflict: John’s position gets replaced by an AI system. John and union begin to fight back.
“John, we are truly sorry. I know you have put a lot of effort and passion into our company but we really don’t need this position anymore. Maybe you can apply to another position.” A man with a suit sitting in the office says. I was so surprised that he was turned away from the human resources office before he even entered it. I really need this job. Not only for myself, but also for his family. When I graduated from college, I dreamed about having a job from 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week, and a family with two kids. I had achieved it all. I had a job as an archivist, a lovely wife and two girls. We were talking about where to go during company vacation a few weeks ago but never expected life to change drastically that quickly.
My life was simple, I know I just want to be an ordinary person, have an ordinary job and an ordinary family since college. People are saying my dream is boring and I have no vision. Unlike them, I knew that to achieve something ordinary is never an easy option. I, like many other people in their college, did not know what to learn and what to do for the future.
On the summer break right before my sophomore class, I had an appointment with my counselor. His name is Issac, with short curly hair and outdated gold frame glasses that don’t match his age. He looks young, like a college student. Although I know I should judge people by their appearance, I still feel a lot comfortable talking to someone that is close to my age even if they just look like my age.
“What brings you here, John?” He looks at his monitor for a while and says.
I still feel a bit weird talking to someone I really don’t know, “ eh, school says I need to choose a major.”
“You got anything interesting to you? Have you checked our major list?”
“Not really, I just want to have a job after I graduate, a simple job. Something steady and pays ok.”
Issac looks confused. He looks pale but he is energetic. He slides away from me on his office chair and begins typing on his computer. Then he turned his computer to me and started talking, “So, there are tons of jobs that are steady, computer science, engineering, HR……” He is so excited while showing me the result and sharing the information he has. He waves his hands describing which major I need to complete to get the job.
I look at him and nod, “ what about a student counselor or something like that?”
“Seriously? You are not joking, are you? I can share some experiences with you……”
College life is short and fast. Student debt is like a mountain sitting on my shoulder. I was the fortunate one who got the job offer right after graduation. A job that matches all my expectations, steady and ordinary, and a Data-entry clerk.
