Activity: Word Cloud

As the introduction discussion board illustrates, we all have similarities and differences based on our
backgrounds, experiences, interests, and beliefs, among other factors. When it comes to discussing
health and wellness our own personal biases can undoubtedly influence our perspectives. Given the
topics that will be covered in this course it is important that we recognize our own biases and respect
those of our classmates in order to maintain an overall positive learning environment. To get a better
understanding of the perspectives of everyone in the class your first discussion board will be based on
completing your own Word Cloud and analyzing your classmates’.
Instructions:
Step 1: Build Your Word Cloud
• Brainstorm a list of words, phrases, quotes, ideas, thoughts, beliefs, etc. that come to mind
when you think of “optimal health and wellness.”
• Option #1: Wordle
o Go to http://www.wordle.net> select “create.”
o Paste/type your words, phrases, etc. into the text box and click the “Go” button directly
beneath the box.
o Your Wordle should appear (if not, click “Not Working?” below the text box).
o Use the functions at the top of the text field (Edit, Language, Font, Layout, and Color) to
alter your Wordle to your desired format.

• Option #2: Word It Out
o Go to http://worditout.com/word-cloud/make-a-new-one
o Paste/type your words, phrases, etc. into the text box and click the “Word it out” button
directly beneath the box.
o Use the functions at the bottom of the text field (Text, Size, Layout, and Color) to alter
your Word Cloud to your desired format. Click “Apply”.

Step 2: Saving Your Word Cloud
• To make a copy of your Word Cloud, use the “screen capture” option on your computer:
o Hold “Ctrl” and “Print Screen” or “PrtScn” (on the upper right of most keyboards) down
simultaneously to copy the screen to your clipboard. (Mac users use: command+shift+3
OR command+shift+4 and select the area to be included in your screenshot.)
