For this final writing assignment, we would like to hear what you are taking away from the semester in Financial Accounting 201. Please write us a letter, telling us about your experience.

Now, this should be your message in your own words. You will be graded on the quality of your presentation and your letter should be approx. 400 or more. Here are a few suggestions to help you:

Choose a theme: think of one or two messages that you want to convey to us. For example:
Accounting really is the “language” of business.
I never understood what “financial statements” were, but now I understand…
This has been the hardest class I’ve ever taken, because…
These are the tips and tricks I learned that allowed me to succeed in this class.
Here are some things I learned about how accounting is actually used in the real world.

Outline your message before you write the letter. As you organize your thoughts, think about the things you want to say and put them in order: First, second, third, etc. Then write your letter.

As you write, keep your theme in mind, and support it: Describe accounting concepts or topics that were most challenging to you, and what you eventually learned. Describe areas of your life (listening to the news, talking with co-workers or friends) where you now understand something that you didn’t understand before taking this class. Think about your first day of class: what did you expect? Has “accounting” turned out to be what you thought it was? You might even want to describe how the COVID-19 epidemic affected your ability to stay focused. It’s up to you!

Remember the structure of a good letter (refer to the example in the materials in the Writing Assignment section): Create a good opening paragraph, present your thoughts in orderly fashion, breaking them into logical paragraphs, support your points with examples, and summarize your message at the end.

Be honest: We don’t expect you to say that accounting is the most exciting thing you have ever studied (unless it is!).

Proofread and Check your work! After you have written your letter, go back and re-read it. Check for spelling mistakes. Read your sentences out loud: Is your grammar correct? Is your message clear and professional?
