A Particular Category of Arts and Intercultural Communication

You will be asked questions where you can evaluate and reflect on what you have learnt about intercultural communication. There will also be a question asking you to discuss how the course has affected your appreciation of the arts and intercultural communication.

To prepare for this, you should do the following task:
Choose one of the categories within the arts:
Traditional categories within the arts include
literature (e.g., poetry, drama, story),
the visual arts (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpture),
the graphic arts (e.g., painting, drawing, design),
the plastic arts (e.g., sculpture, modeling),
the decorative arts (e.g., furniture design, mosaic),
the performing arts (theatre, dance, music), and
architecture (often interior design)

Choose one of the above-given categories. And do the following: Write notes to answer these questions. You can use bullet points as this is an exercise to prepare you for your final task next week.
Write an extended definition of the category you have chosen. Remember to mention the sub-categories it includes.

History
Write a brief history of the category (e.g., when and where it originated, why it was first used, how it developed over the years, etc.)

Practices in Different Countries/Cultures
Choose two different countries in which this category of arts has been produced extensively. Describe how it portrays the cultures of the countries. Provide visuals where relevant. (The countries you choose must be very different from each other as well as your own country. For instance, one may be Sweden and the other one may be Russia).
Evaluate the place of this category of arts in your own culture and compare it to its place (and practice) in the two countries you described above.
Discuss the role this category of arts (can) plays in enhancing communication across cultures. Provide evidence where relevant.
Reflect on your own likes, dislikes, personality traits etc. and explain what you like or dislike about this category of arts and why.
Evaluate the extent to which and the particular ways in which this task has helped you improve your intercultural communication skills.
