There seems to be two ways to write about this story. First, you might consider the story in two parts: before the accident, after the accident. Does the story shift from comic to tragic? How does the world change? Consider the setting, the tone of the story, the atmosphere. How do these things change? And why did O’Connor write it this way? Is she saying something about the way our worlds can change in an instant? The SECOND way to write about the paper is to study the main characters, especially the grandmother and the Misfit. You might also discuss Bailey and the Mother, even the kids. How are all of these characters different? What does each represent? Study them one at a time, ending with the grandmother and then the Misfit. This would be a character study. The point of the character study is to ask the question, what did Flannery O’Conner seem to be saying by these characters? Are they stuck? Do they change?
