Aims of the essay:
• Identify what is meant by the term ‘low vision’ or ‘visual impairment’ and
discuss how these definitions or models apply to the patient in the associated
case study. (PROVIDED IN ADDITIONAL MATERIALS UNDER CASE STUDY PATIENT HAS WET MACULAR DEGENERATION)
• Critically reflect upon how these terms or models are underpinned by, or
contrast, psycho-social models and frameworks relating to impairment and the
lived experience of a person.
• Using an appropriate evidence base, discuss the pathophysiology presenting in
the associated patient, and evaluate its impact on the patient’s visual function.
• Evaluate what the evidence base suggests about the long-term prognosis for
the patient.
• Utilising the evidence identified, link the patient’s reported issues with their
daily lived experience, to the pathophysiology and its impact on visual function.

Main Body Discussion: This should address the aims listed above, and address the
learning outcomes stated.
Conclusion (Max 10% of wordcount). State the conclusions that have been drawn
from the evidence presented – do not make this just descriptive.
A Critical Reflection of your involvement in the management
of the patient, how this might be improved and what you
have learned from this assessment. It is often helpful for you
to use multiple reflective cycles but do not waste words
explaining the theory of the cycle you have used.
Include your strengths and weaknesses, and evaluate your
own practice and that of others, using multiple frames of
reference. Consider actions and alternative future actions

the most contemporary, reliable and credible, relevant sources, is the key to
achieving distinction grades. If a source discusses, let us says, an approach to patientcentred care, are there other sources that support their thinking/research? Or, are
there other researchers that disagree? That is an academic discussion.
