Journal articles are usually reports of empirically studies, review articles or theoretical articles.
We will review all three but you should note that the papers you will be writing will consist of
reports of empirical studies.
Review Articles. Review articles are critical evaluations of material that has already been
published. The author of a review article considers the progress of current research toward
clarifying a problem. The author:
(1) defines and clarifies the problem:
(2) summarizes previous investigations in order to inform the reader of the state of current
research
(3) identifies relations, contradictions, gaps and inconsistencies in the literature and (4) suggests
next steps in solving the problem.
Theoretical articles. Theoretical articles present empirical information only when it affects
theoretical issues. The author traces the development of theory in order to expand and refine
theoretical constructs. Ordinarily, the author presents a new theory. Alternatively, the author
may analyze existing theory, pointing out flaws or demonstrating the superiority of one theory
over another.
Reports of empirical studies. Reports of original research consist of various sections including
the introduction, method, results and discussion.
1. Introduction. Develops the problem under investigation and presents a statement of purpose
for the study.
2. Method: describes the methods used to conduct the investigation, the participants, measures
or instruments, and the procedures used.
3. Results: report of the statistical analysis employed along with the results found.
4. Discussion: provides an interpretation of and discusses the implications of the results
including their generalizability, limitations and future directions for research.
