* You will identify four pieces of information for each idea using the format listed below.
* You will ultimately choose 1 idea to carry through to step 2 and the final product.
* **THERE IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT COMPLETING STEP 1 AT THE BASE OF THIS ASSIGNMENT**

USE THIS FORMAT FOR STEP 1 (For each of your three ideas identify four elements):
1. IDEA #1
1. Identify a specific dominant-hegemonic ideology/message you would like to challenge & WHY
2. Identify the specific institution that maintains the ideology/message you have selected, handing them down to the public. SEE A LIST OF POSSIBLE INSTITUTION-TYPES LISTED BELOW
3. Identify possible types of specific imagery you plan to appropriate from the institution you selected (logos, branding, etc.)
4. Indicate which materials you plan to use (source photos & photo editing, paper pencil, etc.)
2. IDEA #2
3. IDEA #3

* there’s another video below!

2. SUBMIT a PDF, DOC, or DOCX

Additional information for completing Step 1:
* If institutions in power are responsible for maintaining the status quo by asserting dominant ideologies on the public, culture jams allow us to challenge the status quo.
* EXAMPLES OF TYPES OF DOMINANT HEGEMONIC INSTITUTIONS:
* specific media outlets (specific newspapers, magazines, news channels, etc.
* specific companies
* specific corporations
* specific governmental agencies (EX: the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is a specific agency within state government)
* specific military bodies (EX: US Navy SEALS, US Air Force)
* specific political parties
* specific educational institutions (EX: Yale University)
* specific religious institutions
* More information on the four elements you’ll provide for each of your 3 ideas:
1. Identify a specific dominant-hegemonic ideology/message you want to challenge that is reinforced by institutions in power. Think about the part institutions in power have played in naturalizing those ideologies. What type of ideology would you like to challenge and why?
2. Identify the SPECIFIC institution in power associated with the ideology/message/aspect of the status quo you wish to address. See the list of possible institutions above.. BE SPECIFIC.
3. Identify materials you will appropriate from those institutions. What imagery, branding, logos, slogans, etc. are available for you to appropriate?
* The appropriation and subversion of the imagery/words belonging to these institutions are a crucial aspect of culture jamming.
* How do you plan to challenge these institutions by using their own imagery, branding, slogans, etc.? Again, this is a crucial part of culture jamming.
* Their advertisements – what can you change in a pre-existing ad to change the message of the ad?
* Their uniforms– how can you alter an aspect of a uniform (such as a badge or patch) to send a new message, to change what that uniform is meant to represent?
* Their logos – what can you change in a pre-existing company logo to change the message of the logo?
* Their slogans– what can you change in a pre-existing company slogan to change the message of the slogan? Which words can you swap out?
* Other aspects of branding–– what can you change in other aspects of pre-existing company branding to change the message of the brand? See chapter 7 for more info on branding.
* Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory can help you with this.LINK TO VIDEO WE WATCHED

* Links to an external site.

* What is the dominant/preferred reading of the imagery you appropriate? How can you change the source material to create a new meaning opposed to the original reading?
4. Identify the materials you plan to use to create your culture jam: include what type of media you want to use to create your final product (manipulated digital images, photos, collage, drawing, etc.)
* Take a look at the “How to Use Source Material” section of this document below.

HOW TO USE SOURCE MATERIALS FOR YOUR PROJECTS CORRECTLY:
* As mentioned, you can use preexisting images/artworks as source material.
* Using source material is a crucial aspect of culture jamming.
* There are general rules and guidelines for using source material.
* You may combine different source images in specific ways or edit preexisting images in specific ways.
* Your edits/mash ups should be crucial to your project’s message.
* How you change the source material should be essential to why your image fits the assignment.
* Be sure to give some kind of credit whenever using source images. MLA citations are required for this assignment.
* I would also recommend:
