Essay (#2) Prompts for The Tempest
Directions:
Write a four to six-page paper, written in third person (no “I “or “You” statements), that responds to one of the essay prompts. Please use MLA college formatting for the essay and all citations. Do not forget to use the act, scene and line numbers for in-text citations of Shakespearian plays (for example1.2.349-352). No credit will be given to work that is plagiarized (so please properly cited work you quote or paraphrase). Finally, beyond the citations from the play, pleases use at least one other source from our course reading (Brown or Willis) as support for your essay’s argument. Write a four to six-page paper, written in third person (no “I “or “You” statements), that responds to one of the following questions.
Essay Questions:
• How does Caliban’s tragic colonization make Prospero’s romance (i.e., happy conclusion) possible in The Tempest? What does Prospero learn from his colonization of Caliban that allows him to defeat his brother and regain his Dukedom? You should begin your essay by defining the genre of romance. You must use at least one source when discussing the play’s genre form or colonization.
• Can Prospero really be considered a colonizer if he is willing to abandon the island? If Prospero and the others leave Caliban alone on the island, can Caliban ever be free from the cultural lessons of servitude he has learned from Prospero and Miranda? You should begin your essay by defining colonialism and use at least one secondary source to discuss the cultural costs of colonization for Caliban.
Use the question in bold text, in whichever topic you choose, as your early thesis question. The underlined question suggests the direction of your inquiry. Brainstorm your answer to the question, using all your resources, in a spider chart, bubble chart or whatever brainstorm tool you choose; then answer the question. That answer is your rough thesis.
