GOAL:

To complete a guided meditation and assess your body’s physiological and psychological response.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Download the app HeadspaceLinks to an external site. on your phone and create a FREE account. NOTE: If you would like to use another meditation app like Calm that’s fine too, Headspace has a free meditation module which is why I recommend it.
  • On the different types of meditation packs, click on “Basic”
  • Complete Day 1 and Day 2 of the basic pack on 2 different days
  • When doing the meditations, make sure to follow all instructions provided on the app!

After completing BOTH days, please discuss the following:

1. The time of day you meditated on Day 1 and why you chose this time of day.
2. The time of day you meditated on Day 2 and why you chose this time of day.
3. Your experience during the meditation each day- how did your body feel physically?
4. How did you feel right after the meditation was over (on each day)?
5. Was there a difference in how you felt on day 1 vs, day 2
6. Based on the textbook, what do you think is happening to your body physiologically during meditation?
7. Provide 2 recommendations for increasing mindfulness in the general population. Make sure to cite your sources for where you got this recommendation, You must do this in order for the assignment to be marked as complete.

Prejudice and Stereotyping discussion

GOAL:

To explore your own implicit biases and how this may influence stereotyping and prejudice, as well as discuss your own lived experiences.

Remember- we ALL have implicit biases- and sometimes even explicit biases that come out in the form of prejudice or discrimination. This is going to be a conversation that might make you uncomfortable as the topic is often not discussed with family/friends. Please respect everyone’s lived experiences. Remember, if we don’t talk about these things and educate ourselves about how implicit and explicit biases work, we won’t be able to reduce these behaviors. Knowledge IS power.

1. In your OWN words, what is the difference between a stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination? Provide an example of prejudice stereotyping, and discrimination in the real world.
2. What is the danger of a single story? What does viewing someone based solely on their membership in a specific group often lead to?
3. What are 2 historical examples of prejudice and discrimination?
4. What is your understanding of privilege? Discuss a time when you have experienced privilege and might not have known it.
5. Racism, sexism, prejudice, and discrimination are pervasive within our social structures and often perpetuate oppression and inequality. What are some ways we can reduce implicit biases, prejudice and discrimination? In 3- 5 sentences, provide some concrete examples of strategies e can use to educate people about prejudice and ways to reduce it.
