• Offer a brief outline of the reasons that every Christian should be concerned about theology.
  • • Why: Biblical Theology understands the authors’ perspective that all of scripture is the truths of God, from redemptive history to Christ’s second return. Even though there are different perspectives and genres, they all point to God in His story.
      • To be a testimony of the changed life that comes from knowing Jesus Christ personally as we grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
      • To be able to defend our faith in love and respect.
      • To support each other by lifting each other up in our Triune God’s Holy inerrant Words.
      • To know our God who is relational.
    • How: Rightly dividing the Word of God.
      • Observe and outline what you see.
      • Interpret by studying who the author is and why they wrote the passage.
      • Then we Apply what we have observed and interpreted.
    • What: Words can have different meanings, mainly when translating Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic to English. So using trusted resources will know we are dealing with the truth.
      • A concise Biblical Commentary
      • Illustrated Biblical dictionary
      • A concordance
      • An Illustrated Biblical handbook
    • Where: Study the region.
      • Study what the people of that region believe and why.
  • Develop a concise case in support of biblical theology.
    • Truth is actual for everyone, or it is not the truth; it is false. Truth cannot be relevant to one person and not another because it would not be accurate. According to Hamilton (2014, pg. 20),[1] God guided all Biblical authors by His Spirit. Just because someone does not believe that the scriptures are from God does not make them not written by Holy Spirit-driven men. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)[2] The truth is, if the unbeliever investigated, they would find that scripture is too perfect not to be given by the inspiration of a perfect God.
  • Include a definition and at least 3 reasons for studying and thinking theologically
    • Biblical Theology is the studying from the scripture authors’ perspective on how God works yesterday, today, and forever, given to them by the Holy Spirit.
      • One reason is so we cannot be deceived by what the world thinks is truth in making truth relevant to them and not for everyone. Truth cannot be just accurate for one person and not for another, or it is false. “Truth matters, and you have to defend what you believe to be true.” (Goldsworthy, 1991, 19).[3]
      • We need to get truth that is from the very source of truth, God.
      • Secondly, I appreciate how Hamilton (2014, 16) put it that the study of Biblical Theology is a quest in destroying things that rises against the truth of God to be succsessful.[4] We are in a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:12). A struggle is going on for our minds, hearts, and actions. The only way to battle is by placing our minds, hearts, and actions captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3–5).
      • Lastly, studying and thinking on biblical theology helps us ask questions that we might not ask otherwise and will help us get to the answer from truth so we become bette faithful servants to our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is true that the Old Testament contains a plethora of people or principles that serve as types foreshadowing the person and work of Christ in the New Testament. Names like Noah, Abraham, Joseph, and David immediately spring to mind. Still, one individual who foreshadowed the future mediatorial work of Christ is Moses. Moses was chosen by God as a prophet to declare His will for His people; he was also representing the people as a priest mediating between God and man.

While men like Moses stand as insightful examples of godliness and faith, our primary concern here is, as Graeme Goldsworthy notes, the role Moses plays in revealing and foreshadowing the nature of the work of Christ.¹ A text that reveals the mediatorial work of Moses is found in Exodus 32:1-14. Previously, Moses had ascended Mount Sinai to receive the 10 Commandments from the finger of God. God’s people who were waiting at the bottom of the mountain became impatient and decided amongst themselves, with Aaron’s approval, to build an idol that would lead them in Moses’ place. Because of their disobedience God’s anger was ignited. In fact, he requested Moses to leave Him alone so that “my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you[Moses] into a great nation”(v. 10 CSB).

Moses, who could have been infatuated with God’s offer to destroy his kinsman and start over with him as the primary progenitor of God’s chosen people, instead, stepped between God and His looming judgement to plead with the Lord to bestow grace and mercy instead of wrath. “Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God” (v. 11). Moses petitioned for the Lord to forgive His “stiff-necked people” by referencing the mighty work He did to provide deliverance for His people out of Egypt. Also, Moses asks God to remember the patriarchs and the promises He made to them, thus making them into a great nation with descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. In the end, Yahweh relented judging His people people due to Moses’ intercession.

Jesus Christ would serve as a the perfect mediator between God and man providing intercession, in contrast to an imperfect mediator like Moses who would eventually be disqualified from entering into the promised land. Moses, at the end of the day, was just a type that pointed to the ultimate fulfillment in God’s Son. “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5). Jesus Christ has obtained a superior ministry, and is the mediator of a better or new covenant (Heb. 8:6). Unlike the Mosaic Covenant which was a mutual agreement between God and His people, the New Covenant is a divine gift that was payed for exclusively with Christ’s blood.² In the end, we have a mediator in Christ who, unlike Moses, lived the perfect life satisfying the justice and law of God while simultaneously providing believers with eternal life. In light of this great truth, let us, as the writer of Hebrews declares, “approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”(4:16). Finally, in the God-man Jesus Christ we find the ultimate High Priest who is able to intercede for those who place their trust in Him.
