Determine the age and developmental stage and how that impacts the child related to the safety concern.
Infants and toddlers below 18 months move throughout a home through walking and are crawling at a high risk of falling with inadequate supervision, and insufficient safety guards on heights and windows in homes. They do not know right from wrong and might end up falling from seats, beds, or down the stairs. A child can sustain mild to severe injuries after a fall, hence the need for safety measures by caregivers.
- Why the safety education you chose will benefit the pediatric population? Who do you believe is the target age range for this specific educational teaching?
Safety education is imperative for caregivers and parents or crawling and walking infants and toddlers to prevent falls and medical emergencies in homes. Children at this age are fascinated by the fact they can move, therefore, moving toward things that attract their attention without considering the dangers ahead. So, parents and guardians need safety education from nurses to make their environment safe from falls by putting barriers on beds (Wayne, 2022).
Nurses can also discourage putting infants and toddlers on high chairs and walkers when alone, and installing safety guards in places that seem risky such as windows and stairs. Above all, nursing professionals can also educate parents to never leave their toddlers and infants without adult supervision to prevent falls and other health hazards (Wayne, 2022).
- Describe at least three nursing diagnoses related to Pediatric Falls
After a fall from a couch, staircase, bed, or off the window, an infant or toddler can sustain several injuries ranging from mild to severe. The nurse can diagnose a head injury from a short distance fall that can lead to hospitalization or worse death if the place the head hit was hard (Mulligan et al., 2017).
Skull fracture is another fall diagnosis a nurse can make for a child who has a long fall one or two floors down. Failure to seek medical attention after a long fall, nurses can diagnose a traumatic brain injury in a child because of internal bleeding that exerts pressure on the brain.
