Map Assignment The World Tour Due: Check the Syllabus

Use your Nystrom Atlas, imagine you won the lottery and money is no object, and plan a one-year world
tour. The rules are; you will be visiting one (1) city per month, beginning with June, thus you must choose
twelve (12) cities in total to complete a one-year world tour. When moving from one city to the next city
you MUST be traveling in an EASTERLY direction. You may cover either hemisphere, northern or
southern, but you must be traveling in an EASTERLY direction. For each location you choose, you will
be writing one paragraph that must include the latitude and longitude of the location, the season in which
you will be visiting (remember the northern and southern hemisphere seasons mirror each other), the
climate, land-use, precipitation, and approximate elevation. In addition, you must include why you want
to visit each location, e.g. skiing, surfing, climbing, historical value, cuisine…
You must also map out your world tour by plotting your locations on https://earth.google.com/
You will need a google account to use this. Full instructions will be posted in a video link in Canvas.

Location #1 – Quito, Equador. 0° Latitude, 78°W Longitude
For the month of June, I will be traveling to the capital of Equador because of its unique
geography, notable it being one of the highest capital cities in the world at just over 9,000 feet. Quito lies
directly on the equator, therefore in the month of June it will be either summer or winter, as locations on
or near the equator do not experience a change of seasons. It has a Highland climate that is much colder
and drier than the lower elevations along the equator. On average Quito receives about 43 inches of
precipitation per year, which is quite low when compared with other equatorial regions in South America
the regularly receive well over 100 inches of precipitation per year. Land-use in Quito is mixed,
commercial and subsistence farming, and has a fairly dense population with over 250 persons per square
mile. After spending one-month in the high altitude mountainous landscape of Quito, I believe I will be
ready for a more tropical region near the ocean in east Brazil.
