Credit will be awarded for this assessment based on the following criteria:

Your answer should:

Describe the abuse(s) and its(their) context (explain where, how and, most importantly, why, in your opinion, the abuse(s) is(are) occurring) (20 Marks);

State and apply International Human Rights Law to the abuse(s) (20 Marks);

Describe and evaluate the relevant UN procedural action (and consider what further action might be taken by the UN) (30 Marks);

Describe and evaluate complementary and alternative strategies and procedures.

These might include:

Action by citizens and NGO’s of the country;

Action to support those citizens and NGO’s;

Action by foreign Governments, including the UK and the EU; and

Action by foreign citizens and NGO’s;

Offer reasoned conclusions why particular procedures and strategies should be used, adopted or continued (30 Marks).

Guidance

For Question 1), you are advised to select a narrow, specific abuse or cluster of abuses that is/are a clear breach of international human rights law and has/have been acted upon by the UN.

For Question 2), you are advised to select, as case-studies and examples, specific abuses that are clear breaches of international human rights law and have been acted upon by the UN.

In describing the abuse(s) and its/their context, be careful to avoid merely ‘cutting and pasting’ material from the reports. You should aim to be as brief as possible, without omitting essentials, providing an effective summary with appropriate referencing.

When evaluating the UN procedures, you should identify what those procedures are intended to achieve and what in fact they do achieve. You should then consider how they might be made more effective.

When evaluating complementary and alternative strategies and procedures, you should briefly review the alternatives and then concentrate on those you consider most likely to be effective.

The coursework will identify specific human rights abuses and their cultural, economic, political and social background. The coursework will analyse and evaluate actual and potential legal, political and diplomatic strategies and procedures to combat those abuses.

Presentation instructions

The word limit is 6,000. Footnotes and bibliographies do not count towards this total. Footnotes must only be used for referencing and not for additional text. You should provide a Bibliography but Appendices are not required.
