SENIOR THESIS FORMAT GUIDELINES

Components of the thesis in order:

  1. Title Page
  2. Declaration
  3. Acknowledgements (Optional)
  4. Abstract
  5. Table of Contents
  6. List of Figures
  7. Text of Thesis
  8. Works Cited page(s)
  9. Appendices

Components specified:

The submission specifications which follow are intended to make your thesis easy to read and to present it professionally. You are required to follow this standard format unless you have a sound reason to do otherwise. You must get permission from the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences or Journalism if you wish to use a non-standard format.

  1. Title Page

The title page must contain the following information:

  1. Thesis title
  2. Name of the author
  3. School of Study
  4. Semester and Year of submission
  5. Name of the supervisor

The Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences or Journalism will provide you with AAU letterhead on which to print your title page. The thesis does not require a subtitle

  1. Declaration

The declaration follows the Title Page. It certifies that the student worked independently and used only those sources listed in the Works Cited page(s). It must be signed by the student.

  1. Acknowledgements

This page is optional.

  1. Abstract

The abstract should state the thesis title, followed by a brief and complete summary of the thesis.  It should not exceed 350 words.

  1. Table of Contents

A Table of Contents is needed if the thesis is written in chapters. Chapters are recommended. The Table of Contents should display the chapter numbers and titles in italics; the corresponding page numbers should be justified to the right. Subsections to chapters should be included and should be numbered in decimal format; for example, 1.1., 1.2. etc.

  1. List of Figures

If plates or illustrations (i.e. maps, diagrams, charts, photographs) are incorporated into the text, a separate “List of Figures” should be included. Figures should be numbered in lower case Roman numerals; for example, Figure i, Figure ii, etc.

  1. Text of Thesis

Margins should be 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides. This should be adjusted when the thesis is to be bound. i.e., the left margin should become wider, still leaving a 1 inch margin from the binding to the text on the page.

The text should be left-justified only. Paragraphs should be indented ½ inch (1.27 cm). Do not double-space between paragraphs.

Only the text of the thesis should be paginated; i.e. page numbers should begin on the first page of text and end on the last page. The author’s surname should precede each page number; for example, Smith 1; both should be in 10 point font and should appear in the upper right-hand corner. The title should appear on title page only; it is not required on any page of text. The following pages should not be numbered: title page, declaration, acknowledgments, abstract, table of contents, list of figures, works cited and appendices. The writer should create these pages as separate files.

The entire thesis should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font with the exception of the pagination header which is 10 point. Italics and underlining should be used sparingly and only for citing sources or to show emphasis. Bold type should normally not be used in the text of the thesis.

Unless otherwise specified by the thesis supervisor, Modern Language Association (MLA) format should be used for all use of sources the thesis. (See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11/). Quotations, paraphrases and summaries must be cited using parenthetical (in-text) citations, footnotes or endnotes. It is recommended that in-text citation be used to identify sources and footnotes be used to provide supplemental information. The use of endnotes is discouraged. Refer to current MLA guidelines for formatting specifics.

  1. Works Cited

Unless otherwise specified by the thesis supervisor, the Modern Language Association (MLA) format should be used for the Works Cited page.  Refer to current MLA guidelines (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11/). The Work Cited page should provide a complete bibliographic reference for all, and only, those sources cited in the text.

  1. Appendices

Appendices present detailed information which would be distracting in the main text of the thesis. Appendices are lettered if there is more than one; e.g. Appendix A, Appendix B.

<SAMPLE PAGE THESIS TEXT>

Smith 1

This sheet mimics the format you should use for your thesis. Your last name and the page number should be at the top right of each page (as a header in 10 point font). For best results, print assignments on a laser printer or ink jet printer. The text should Times Roman plain style (not bold or italicized), 12-point, and double-spaced. Each paragraph should be indented.  All margins should be 1 inch (2.54 cm). This paragraph has these limit margins.  Be careful; some word processors are set for 1.25 inch side margins, which are too big.

These specifications are not the most important thing about your work. Your writing (research) is the most important criteria for evaluating your thesis. Citations or reference notes in your text may be either parenthetical (author, page number as per MLA guidelines), or they may be listed as footnotes at the bottom or each page.  It is recommended that Parenthetical citations be used to identify sources and footnotes be used to provide supplemental information. The Works Cited page should be at the end of the paper and should follow MLA guidelines.
