ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE:
• Online submission is via Blackboard, by uploading a presentation file (ppt or pdf). Maximum
20 slides.
• Students will need to present their work via a presentation and answer questions. Students
will need to present the slides they have submitted.
• Presentation/viva: 30 mnts, 15 mnts presentation, 15 mnts QnA.
MARKS: 50% of module

COURSEWORK OPERATION:
This Airbus design coursework project is an individual assignment, not a group project.
COURSEWORK AIMS
On completion of this CW, you should be able to:
• understand and classify design requirements for an aircraft
• gather historical aircraft data for design decisions and initial sizing
• consider a range of design concepts and perform down-selection
• perform market research, including both past and future technologies
• use trend studies and/or other methods for initial sizing estimates
• present aircraft technical data in appropriate formats, including General Arrangement
• develop ability to defend /argue design decisions
WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE PRESENTATION FILE
Your presentation file should detail the process you have gone through to arrive at an initial design for
the aircraft concept which responds to the design requirements as detailed in the Task Specification
document (uploaded under Resit CW Airbus Design Project folder). The Task Specification refers to
a previous Airbus design exercise for 2019/2020 (short range airliner for 190 passengers and 1000
nautical mile (NM) range). The work carried out in this CW is equivalent to the work done up to a
Preliminary Design Review (PDR) stage.
Here is, roughly, what you are expected to produce/show in your presentation file:
• Market Research/Survey of competing aircraft designs of similar range and Pax (Hint:
Consult resources such as Jenkinson’s book, Raymers’ book, Sadraey’s book, Jane’s All the
World’s Aircraft, company online resources, Wiki pages of competing designs etc)
• You can also conduct a Market forecast of future technologies to help you decide your initial
concept
• Show a range of concepts and perform down-selection to your initial concept (include all
sketches, selection matrix) → 3 or 4 concepts is sufficient.
• Include main characteristics e.g. fuselage type, wing shape (swept?, low/high/medium?),
engine type (turbofan, turboprop), number of engines (1, 2, 3, 4…) and location (on/below
wing, aft fuselage?), type of tail assembly (including any specific control surfaces), landing
gear type, with brief explanation.
• Any particular new design features you want to have? Be creative.
• Based on data gathered from competing aircraft and any simple initial sizing approaches (e.g.
see lecture notes, text books), work out and list the main design values for your initial concept
e.g. MTOW, fuselage size (length, diameter), rough engine size, wing loading W/S, thrust to
weight ratio T/W, operating empty weight WOE, Wing size (area, span, AR), control surfaces
size, fuel weight/MTOW, cruise M number, etc
• Initial General Arrangement (standard 3-view) for your chosen initial concept
(drawn to scale based on your initial sizing).
There is no expectation for you to produce an initial cabin layout.
INDICATIVE GUIDELINE FOR COURSEWORK RESIT
Credit will be given for presentation of essential information in a clear and concise manner, as well as
for clear arguments of your design choices and decisions. The guidelines for the grades awarded for
your Individual work are outlined in EDM’s Assessment Guidelines as posted on Blackboard.
READING STRATEGY
Students are expected to make considerable use of any supplied lecture/tutorial notes as well as selfidentified sources appropriate to this coursework. Please consult aircraft design lecture notes, initial
sizing tutorials and aircraft design textbooks that were uploaded for the Airbus Design CW on BB.
MARKING SCHEME
• Background research, understanding of requirements, historical aircraft data gathering,
concepts and down-selection [40%]
• Trend studies, initial sizing method and initial sizing parameters, GA [50%]
• Quality of presentation [10%]
