This essay is about how construction is impacting our environment. Construction is an
ongoing sight in growing cities like Phoenix, Arizona, and even though it may seem nice to see
new development in a growing city, it comes at a very high cost. According to some researchers,
sediment is a big problem for our environment. Constructions sediment is the largest concern for
many researchers. This sediment contaminates our water. While some believe there is a solution
to the problem, others argue, it is only a temporary fix that will take more time and money to
reverse if reversible at all. Although new construction brings something pretty and new to see on
the way to work or school, the bad can often time outweigh the good when it comes to the
environment.
Construction negatively affects the environment. According to a case study written by
Sheila Belayutham*, Vicente A. Gonzalez, Tak Wing Yiu: Cleanelean administrative processes: a
case study on sediment pollution during construction, a process during some types of
construction called ‘earthwork’ is the reason for soil loss and pollutants. Soil loss happens when
the open area where construction is taking place is hit by rain or wind. Soil runs into rivers,
lakes, and streams or gets wisped away into the air. It may seem harmless but Researches
Belayutham, Gonzalez, and Yiu state differently; in their case study, they argue that the soil
runoff contaminates our water with sediment and can be detrimental to ocean life
Construction sediment also affects the water that people use every day. In the video,
“Cleaning Up Construction Runoff.” Films On Demand, Films Media Group, 2012 It shows the

effects of stormwater coming into contact with construction sediment. The result is called
construction runoff. soil scientists in the video say they have found a way affected by these
runoffs, but they have to use chemicals to do so. They say it is non-toxic. Sheila Belayutham*,
Vicente A. Gonzalez, Tak Wing Yiu, due to cleanups runoffs are a temporary solution that will
cause a lot of time and money to try and reverse. According to the article “Construction
Pollution”, something called environmental waste affects the air, land, and water. The article also
states that environmental waste is the unnecessary use of resources and the release of substances
that can be harmful to humans. For example, the article mentions that environmental waste is the
reason for children’s medical issues such as asthma.
In the end, it hardly seems worth it to do unnecessary construction. Construction runoff affects
the water so badly that it leads to scientists having to put chemicals in just to clean it, and that
environmental waste has been proven to make people sick, even children. The pros are
outweighed by the cons.
