to explore the impact of living with type2 diabetes

In successful completion of this assessment and this module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a deep understanding of, and ability to critically evaluate, the role of qualitative methods within health psychology.
  2. Demonstrate competence in choosing, applying and reporting qualitative data generation/collection and analysis techniques in the context of research within health psychology.

Summative Assessment [Graded Assessment]

The word limit does not include the: title, abstract, reference list or appendices. It does include all in-text citations, tables, and data excerpts.

Assessment Overview

There is one piece of coursework for this module comprising a 4000-word qualitative research report. This report is worth 100% of your module mark. The portfolio must be written in English.

The word limit for the portfolio is 4000 words (maximum) and includes all in-text citations, tables, figures and data excerpts. The word could DOES NOT include your title page (including declaration statement), abstract, reference list or appendices. There is no 10% variance applied. Words beyond the 4000-word limit will NOT be reviewed for grading.

You will be provided with a choice of secondary qualitative data sets and associated research aim(s)/questions.

  • Type 2 diabetes
o Research aim: to explore the impact of living with type2 diabetes; Secondary source Health talk online

You will need to consider the data sets and the associated research aim and select one to work with. Next, you will decide on a method of analysis and epistemological position that is appropriate to analyse the data within. I have selected interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as the method and epistemology. Following this, you will then write a qualitative research report using the data provided, following the guidance for writing a qualitative report below.

Please note: if using an IPA approach, you may only need to use a selection of the data provided. Please speak to your tutor for more information.

Guidance for Writing a Qualitative Research Report

In your report it is expected that you will include the following sections:

Title

This should be a clear, concise and informative title that reflects the focus and nature of the research report.

Abstract

A structured abstract which is clear, concise and informative and outlines the: background, aim(s), methods (including participant details), results/findings and conclusions of the study.

Introduction

  • Clear introduction to the chosen health psychology topic
  • Review of relevant research that drives the research aim/question
  • Critical evaluation of the literature and a breadth of appropriate reading
  • Provides a rationale for the research question/aim
  • Provides a rationale for using a qualitative approach
  • Clear identification of the research question/aim
  • Logical structure

Methods – Apply BPS guidelines

Structured methods section including the following sub-sections: design, participants, materials, procedure, ethical considerations and analytic strategy.

  • Discussion of the epistemological position and its fit with the method of analysis and method of data collection
  • Detailed discussion of the method of data analysis in the analytic strategy
  • Detailed description of the participants (including basic demographic information where available)
  • Detailed and appropriate discussion of the study ethical considerations

Analysis – IPA six stage process in Smith, J., Flowers, P., & Larkin, M. (2022). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: Theory, method and research. Sage Publications Ltd.

  • Identification of the themes/sub-themes (or similar) or other findings
  • Clearly set out with participant quotes distinguishable from surrounding analytical text
  • Structured analysis e.g. with quotations illustrating analytic or interpretative points
  • Analysis that links to the wider literature and research aim
  • Analysis grounded within the scope of relevant methodological literature (e.g. focusing on experience in IPA) and reflective of the epistemology.
  • Presents themes that are grounded in the data
  • Analytic and/or interpretative rather than purely descriptive
  • Analysis is evidenced with data quotes clearly

Shows a sound understanding of the chosen method of analysis and thorough engagement with the relevant literature

Discussion – BPS guidelines

  • Reiterates the aim and reiterates the main findings/theme(s) of the report.
  • Draws the threads of the report together, discussing overall findings and their fit with wider literature/context
  • Recognition of limitations of the study; these should be specific to your study. It is not acceptable to say, ‘findings cannot be generalised’ or there was a ‘small sample size’.
  • Proposals for future research building on your study findings and limitations
  • A concise conclusion

General

  • Clear, concise and informative title that indicates an appropriate topic or area of study
  • Well organised and appropriately structured according to standard psychological reporting
  • Is within the word limit
  • Well written with good academic writing style
