The ultimate purpose of professional research is to solve a problem. Whether the researcher puts the results of the
research in writing or just applies the new knowledge to personal practice is irrelevant. The need to apply critical thinking
to finding solutions remains paramount. A nurse’s skill in making accurate decisions is rooted in their ability to find,
evaluate, and analyze relevant, quality information. The goal of the Cultural Competence project is to address issues
surrounding cultural differences as they apply to mental healtchare.
Culture can refer to: religion, race, ethnicity, age group, socioeconomic status, education, immigration status, country of
origin, LGBTQ+ status, relationship status, insured status, etc. Mainstream culture is the majority population who generally
exercise control over law, communication (designated language), political processes, educational institutions, business
practices and creative expression.
Cultural Competency vs Cultural Humility in Nursing Care
Cultural competence in health care is broadly defined as the ability of providers and organizations to understand and
integrate these factors into the delivery and structure of the health care system. The goal of culturally competent health
care services is to provide the highest quality of care to every patient, regardless of race, ethnicity, cultural background,

Cultural humility focuses on lifelong learning, self-reflection, removing power differentials (such as provider and patient),
and demonstrating equal respect for different beliefs and points of view. Cultural humility is a more evolved and
evidence-based way of approaching a related concept that may be more familiar, known as cultural competency.
Although both terms reflect efforts to improve relationships between people, cultural competency is memorizing a set of
traits connected to a certain group or a set of questions that you need to ask a specific group of people.
