Name of The Topic: “ANGLICANISM” and the issue is “Transgenderism/Sex-reassignment”
Purpose: To research and critique a classic +or contemporary ethical problem by way of an
assigned religious or philosophical tradition. To apply a religious or philosophical tradition’s
approach to morals and ethics to an ethical issue or moral dilemma and determine the
outcomes.
Length: The paper is to be 2000-2500 words – do not be fooled by word processor wordcounts, they often count very small words, letters, numbers and citations as ‘words’ when they
are not. An easy way to get a true academic word-count is to add up the major words on a
single line of random text and to multiply it by the number of lines per page, then multiply the
result by the number of full pages. Short papers will be penalized marks.
Requirements: All of the facts and uncommon information in this assignment must be
supported by the sources obtained from your research. Sources used must be properly cited:
YOU MUST USE A PROPER STYLE GUIDE (APA) to format your in-paper citations, bibliography,
and the essay in general. This assignment requires that you make use of a minimum of 5
academic sources in writing your paper; a real ‘academic’ source is something that has been
peer-reviewed and published in the field. As per the evaluation sheet, nearly ½ of the paper will
be evaluated on proper written English. DON’T PLAGIARIZE!
Source 1: Make use of the book from different reliable University libraries. You can also check
the ALTA Religion Dtabase of articles on religion (it is in the list of on-line databases). Seldom
does one book, even if it is long and detailed, do justice to the topic. Use other materials from
different books when needed for information and use the source. At the same time, don’t try to
read everything you can find on your subject. Remember, you are writing an academic essay;
do not try to include every simple detail into your paper.
Source 2 Online: The internet can be a great source of useful information. But anyone can put
almost anything they wish on the Web, including stuff that is not true. Generally, think of the
Web as an odd mix of scholarship, personal opinion, and public relations junk (especially so in
matters of religion). If you use Web resources, you need to be able to make such distinctions to
ensure a given site’s academic reliability. Web sites run by universities, organizations like the
United Nations or the like are generally trustworthy. Remember, academic sources include
documents that have been reviewed by others in the field, items that are published by
accredited institutions and well-known organizations. Personal opinions of non-experts are not
good sources for academic papers.
What to answer and how to organize/structure the assignment: To get full marks in each of
the sections of the evaluation sheet for this assignment make sure your paper has answers to
the following:
 What is the definition of your moral/ethical issues? Who is involved in it? When does it
occur? Where? How? Why?
 How does your assigned religion/philosophy address it? Were there developments or
changes to their policies over the years?
 Which sources of authority within your assigned religion/philosophy address this
particular (or similar issues). Are some considered more reliable today when compared
to others?
 What are the consequences to violating any of the official religious rules or prescribed
prohibitions in relation to your moral/ethical issue?
 Are their divergent opinions within your religious or philosophical tradition in regards to
your moral/ethical issue?
 How does your assigned religious or philosophical tradition’s approach compare to the
classical approaches of Utilitarianism, Virtue-ethics, or Kantianism (pick any two out of
these three)?
 What is your opinion regarding the official religious position on this issue? What is your
opinion regarding the issue itself?
The “classic” form of writing an essay is actually very simple:
 To write a well-structured essay you should have a proper introduction paragraph which states
your central thesis.
 In addition to this simple central thesis statement, your introduction should also include a
proper reason for writing this paper, and a basic outline of how the paper will be organized and
what it will address.
 After this introduction comes a body of several paragraphs which elaborates upon and
demonstrates the thesis statement and answers the above listed questions per your stated
outline;
 Finally, a strong conclusion which states your views (with a minimal summary or repetition).
 Naturally, throughout the whole paper, any fact that is not considered ‘common knowledge’ to
all persons must be cited properly.
Grading will also be based on these criteria:
 Essay conforms to an appropriate APA style manual, especially regarding citations and
bibliography. In-text citations must include the author’s last name, year and the page number.
 It is legible; it is double spaced; it is the correct length; it is presented neatly.
 Paper includes proper title page information with your name, student #, date, title of paper,
correct margins, page numbers, readability, headings, and who it is for as per your style guide
choice.
 Formal Canadian English is used. Do not use contradictions, clichés, and slang language. If you
use a spell checker, set its options to Canadian English (CE). If you use a grammar checker, set its
options to “formal”.
 Non-gendered language is used when referring to human beings unless specifically discussing a
man or woman.
 Essay has been carefully proof-read for grammatical and spelling errors. Spell-check helps, but
it does NOT catch everything that proof-reading does.
 Correct use of grammar and Punctuation: plurals, possessives, subject-verb agreement,
noun-pronoun agreement, misplaced modifiers, slang, use of commas, semicolons,
colons, periods, quotation marks, parentheses, dashes, spelling, Canadian English,
inclusive language, etc.
 Direct quotations and paraphrased materials are sourced properly, documented with citations.
Failure to document your sources is dishonest and will lower your grade substantially.
 Make sure you include a complete, and correct, bibliography of all sources used.
