VUCA AGILITY EXPERIMENT PROPOSAL
Choose from either A, B, or C as your VUCA Agility Experiment—
- “DNA of VUCA:” David Peterson (2019), the head of talent management at Google, gave a talk on what he calls “the DNA of VUCA.” He suggests that in order to thrive in VUCA, we need to do the following and I recommend that you pick at least two of these three for your experiment. The following three are ideas, so be creative.
- Diverse experiments, for example, next time you have to make a truly difficult decision, ask three people for advice, someone you don’t know, someone with a controversial point of view, and someone who has no clue what you are trying to accomplish
- Novelty—seek new situations. Do something totally new and out of your comfort zone, e.g., sign up for trapeze school; go to a networking event where you know no one; eat food you have never eaten before and avoided;
- Adversity-Put yourself in a difficult situation (although use common sense please). Athletes do this. You might meet with someone with totally different political views and have a civil conversation.
- Guild Wars 2: Bob Johansen (2017) writes that the leaders who will thrive in a VUCA environment will be gamers, because they will feel more comfortable with ongoing stress tests. This is a good choice, especially if you haven’t played one of these games. To that end, another experiment is to download an online game called Guild Wars 2. You can download it from https://www.guildwars2.com/en/. You will be able to use a free account and will be able to send email invitations to other players. Apparently, they also match you with other players in your immediate geographic area.
- COVID -19: turned everyone’s life upside down in March 2020. Assuming that it continues through this term, keep a journal detailing how you are currently dealing with the pandemic and its after-effects. Specifically outline how your life has been disrupted and how you are or are not coping with the changes. Deliverables:
