What is cultural competence?

The news headlines above touch on a much-discussed topic in STEM and healthcare: Cultural Competence.  There is a very good chance that you will take a course related to cultural competence as part of your academic and career pathway.  Perhaps you have even heard of this concept before

But what exactly is “cultural competence” and is it really the best model for addressing inequities in our fields?

Submit here a sentence or two to describe what you think “cultural competence” might mean.  Have you heard that term before?  If so, where/when?  What do you think might refer to?

There is no need for external research!  This is just a chance to reflect on what the words “cultural competence” mean for you and you can feel free to say you’re not sure!

Gaining expertise on cultural humility

In this assignment you will have the opportunity to learn about an alternative to cultural competence that has become increasingly appreciated by diversity, equity, and inclusion advocates: Cultural Humility.  You will be reading one of three articles divided among the class.  In our next class meeting, you will be sharing this article with colleagues who read other articles!

The biology of stereotype threat

How does stereotype threat operate in our bodies to cause underperformance?

Numerous researchers have done fascinating work to try to address this question.  Much of this work has focused on possible biological mechanisms that might explain stereotype threat.  In other words, they have sought to clarify how our physiology changes during stereotype threat in ways that interfere with brain function – thereby causing us to underperform.

Below is an excerpt from one such study.  Click here or on the image below to review an excerpt from this article.  Focus especially on information about biological or physiological changes that occur during stereotype threat.  Note that “social identity threat” is essentially the same phenomenon as “stereotype threat.”  (if you wish to access the full article, you can find that here)
