What is cultural competence?
The news headlines above touch on a much-discussed topic in STEM and healthcare: Cultural Competence. There is a very good chance that you will take a course related to cultural competence as part of your academic and career pathway. Perhaps you have even heard of this concept before
But what exactly is “cultural competence” and is it really the best model for addressing inequities in our fields?

The biology of stereotype threat
How does stereotype threat operate in our bodies to cause underperformance?
Numerous researchers have done fascinating work to try to address this question. Much of this work has focused on possible biological mechanisms that might explain stereotype threat. In other words, they have sought to clarify how our physiology changes during stereotype threat in ways that interfere with brain function – thereby causing us to underperform.
